Is Brooklyn fed up with food vendors?
The simmering feud between food vendors and brick-and-mortar businesses in Bay Ridge boiled over last week when a group of merchants banded together to displace the Middle Eastern Halal Cart, a popular gyro seller, while disseminating anti-vendor literature. The defiant cart continues to sell lamb over rice on Fifth Avenue, but merchants say this food fight is far from over. We asked two major players on this issue to give us their thoughts: Comment.

Food vendors are bad for business
Food Carts have evolved into kitchens on wheels that operate on the sidewalks — using grills fueled by gas and propane tanks with illuminated signage. These are stationary businesses with as many as three employees per shift — operating 20 hours per day. They employ a full-time manager and wear uniform polo shirts. This is a well-organized business that takes space on public sidewalks using the amenities, sidewalk cleaning services, and street furniture paid for by assessments levied to protect property and business owners. Gangway for southern Brooklyn ferries
A high-tech manufacturing facility, a cultural center and Coney Island casinos were all part of Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz’s vision at this year’s State of the Borough address. But the thing that really got my attention was hearing my longtime colleague’s call to extend East River Ferry Service to connect Manhattan to Coney Island, Sheepshead Bay, Canarsie and, most importantly, Bay Ridge! Parking needs to be assured before we sail away
I was a member of the committees for the rebuilding of the ten Sheepshead Bay Piers both times they were rebuilt, and when I was asked about the possibility of bringing ferry service to the area, I carefully detailed how I personally, and through my civic work with local organizations for more than 25 years, advocated ferry service to and from Sheepshead Bay and how Pier 10 was made wider than the others to make boarding and disembarking ferry passengers easier to manage.
