It’s a quantum leap!

Break out the regalia for Professor Xiang Dong Li, the 2012 Scholar on Campus at City Tech. The Scholar honor was bestowed on Standing O pal Xiang Dong because of “his hands-on expertise and scholarship in information security and applications of quantum physics in quantum computing,” said Dean of Curriculum and Instruction Sonja Jackson. She told Standing O, “His ongoing mentorship of students opens opportunities and motivates them to pursue graduate degrees.” Standing O is motivated and not even a student. Comment.

We can build it better, stronger

It’s the greatest class ever — when the students in third, fourth and fifth grade at PS 188 heard that there was going to be a robotics course offered, they ran over each other to sign up. The new Lego Robotics Program led by Evan Mirenberg, which began in January, teaches children how to build and program a robot. The course also provides a strong foundation for the students to succeed, reenforces how to work together, and prepares them for a techno future that’s only going to get more complex. Comment.

The puck stops here!

Hockey fan Gus Eisenstein, son of our very own Pigskin Prognosticator Ida Eisenstein, dropped the ceremonial first puck at the Feb. 23 Brooklyn Aviators’ game against Canada’s Akwesasne Warriors. Gus gave the team some much needed luck as the A’s ended their four-game losing streak by freezing the Canuks 7-1. Comment.

All hail the scholars!

Congrats go out to incoming freshmen Olivia Calamia, Amarachi Abakporo, Sarah Mathew Katherine O’Donnell, Shannon O’Hea, and Abigail Russell for receiving the Michael Gordon Foundation Scholarship. The Foundation underwrites the merit-based scholarships with a $15,000 donation. Standing O sends out rosebuds to the girls on getting the scholarship, and good luck on their high school road ahead, ‘cause you know it ain’t an easy one. Comment.

They say it’s your birthday!

On Jan. 26, 1911 Glen Curtiss demonstrated the first amphibian aeroplane; on Feb. 17, 1911 Charles Kettering introduced the first electrical ignition system for automobiles, and installed it in a Cadillac; and just two days later on Feb. 19, 1911 Jose and Victoria Acevedo of Hato Tejas, Puerto Rico, had a little girl, who grew up to be our very own Standing O pal, Gavina, who married Juan Galfio Guadarrama and settled here to raise their family. A thousand blessings

Three cheers to Father Joseph Grimaldi. The Pastor at St. Mark’s Parish was recently named as the new parochial vicar for Brooklyn by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio. The good padre said his farewell mass on Jan. 15, officiating at the 12:30 pm service with fellow priests Father Christopher Truczany and Father Andrew Dunyo. When all the Hosea’s were finished, Pastor Joe went outside and blessed the new Marian Prayer and Memorial Comment.
