Thanks to a brilliant pitching performance by Anthony Pastrana, who allowed three hits in the first complete-game of his career, Xaverian wrapped up the top seed for the upcoming CHSAA Class AA championship tournament with a 4-0 victory against Monsignor Farrell last Saturday at the College of Staten Island. Andrew Zapata enjoyed a storybook sophomore season, winning six of his seven starts, throwing five shutouts and tossing a complete-game, one-hitter in May 25’s New York State Association of Independent Schools Athletic Association title game at Manhattanville College in Purchase. His most important contribution, however, in the 8-1 win over Berkeley Carroll had nothing to do with the lightning in his right arm. Comment

Berkeley Carroll had a freshman on the mound (Ian Miller) and a freshman behind the plate (Yanai Feldman). Its cleanup hitter and second baseman (Anthony Spina) was a sophomore, as was one of its top starters. Its ace, catcher and third-place hitter (Joey Martinez) was laid up in a hospital bed, recovering from surgery on his broken right leg. Comment
