Today’s news:

Special day at Astroland for special youngsters

“No man is so tall as when he stoops to help a handicapped child.”

That is the mantra of Community Mayors, Inc., which gave handicapped children two days to remember in Brooklyn with celebrations at Adventures Experience – formerly Nelly Bly in Bath Beach -- and Astroland last month.

Community Affairs officers from Patrol Borough Brooklyn South, as well a retirees from the New York City Department of Sanitation, the New York City Fire Department and other organizations, joined the Community Mayors for some fun in the son.

Borough President Marty Markowitz was also on hand to celebrate with the local kids, as well as thank the Community Mayors for their humanitarian activities.

“The Community Mayors is a philanthropic organization that does a lot for these kids,” said Chief Joseph Fox, the commanding officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South. “Every year, they hold events like these and it gives us a chance for another kind of policing – to reach out to these kids.”

During the celebrations on May 15 and May 28, the owners of Adventures Experience and Astroland closed down their theme parks for a day so the children enrolled with the Community Mayors could have the rides all to themselves.
