Today’s news:

Crime drops in 78th - Burglaries still up in ever-safer precinct

Except for burglaries, crime continues its downward spiral in the 78th Precinct.

For the year so far, according to police statistics, the precinct, which encompasses Park Slope and Windsor Terrace, crime is down 12.8 percent in the major categories, with 349 incidents reported this year compared to 400 in 2007.

In 2008, only burglaries have seen a slight 6.8 increase, with 78 incidents reported as of June 15, compared to 73 in 2007, for the same period.

Meanwhile, robberies are down 12.3 percent; assaults down 31.7, grand larceny down 11.8 percent, and car thefts down 34.1 percent, police statistics show.

There have been three rapes reported in 2008 compared to three in 2007 for the same time period.

There have been no murders yet reported in the precinct.

In a 28-day period ending June 15, the overall data is even more encouraging, with a 21.3 percent overall decline. During this time, though, there were slightly more robberies committed, nine compared to seven in 2007, and 11 burglaries in 2008 compared to 10 last year, the data shows.

Deputy Inspector John Argenziano, the commanding officer of the precinct, said that last year was a “great one” in Prospect Park—and this year promises to be as good, or better.

There have been 15 incidents—grand larcenies and robberies—reported in the park so far, compared to 18 in the park for the same period last year, he told the 78th Precinct Community Council at its June 24 meeting.

“Watch your property,” he advised, noting that grand larceny can be preventable in many cases. Leaving a bag, purse or any other valuable unattended is an invitation to criminals, he added.
