New York Methodist Hospital won a 2008 Regional Commuter Choice Innovator Award for providing commuter benefit programs that encourage employees to use environmentally friendly means of transportation like carpooling, vanpooling, and mass transit.
The Regional Commuter Choice Awards program is coordinated through the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council in collaboration with the New York State Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Mobility Network.
NYM has worked with CommuterLink, an alternative transportation organization, to motivate its 3,000-plus employees to walk, bicycle, take public transportation and join carpools. The hospital, 506 Sixth Street between Seventh & Eighth avenues, began a pre-tax transit benefit plan to help defray employees’ commuting costs and recently received a grant to offer current drivers free transit fare for one month. Bicycle racks, carpooling and ride match options — as well as free shuttle rides to parking garages — are available for all employees.
The Regional Commuter Choice Awards program includes employers in New York City, Long Island, Rockland, Westchester and Putnam Counties. Employers of all sizes and industries that encourage commuter rail, subways, buses, vans/carpools, shuttles, telecommuting and other programs are considered for a Regional Commuter Award.
“The daily commute to work is an important part of all of our employees’ lives, so New York Methodist is honored to receive the 2008 Regional Commuter Choice Award,” said Dennis Buchanan, vice president for NYM’s Department of Human Resources. “We hope that our recent efforts to motivate employees to utilize alternative means of transportation will lead to environmentally conscious, cost-effective, and stress-free commutes.”
