Calvary Hospital hosted the 11th session of Camp Courageous, a children’s bereavement camp located at Arrow Park in Monroe, NY, surrounded by the beautiful and vast Sterling Forest. The 26 participants this year have all attended the children and teen bereavement programs, which Calvary, 150 55th Street, offers year-round. The camp provided a safe, nurturing environment for the children of diverse backgrounds to validate feelings, offer hope, and have fun for a few hours every day.

This year, Camp Courageous featured a special appearance by members of the legendary Harlem Wizards basketball team, an interactive introduction to the practice of capoeira and performance by the Brazilian capoeira dance group, a mosaic art project, tree planting, and a balloon release in memory of loved ones. Supporters of Calvary’s children’s bereavement programs and Camp Courageous include Newman’s Own Foundation, Thomas & Agnes Carvel Foundation, and Robert Mize and Isa White Trimble Foundation, Saramar Charitable Fund, G.L. Connolly Foundation, and Brooklyn Benevolent Society.

Since its inception, “Precious Moments” — Calvary’s bereavement program for young children six to 11 years-old — and its teen bereavement support for 12- to 18-year-olds, have helped hundreds of children with their grief process.

In the New York metropolitan area, Calvary has established itself as a resource for grieving families. It offers free bereavement support groups for adults, children, and teens, and referrals for additional support if necessary. Calvary’s programs are available to anyone who has lost a loved one, whether that person was a patient at Calvary, or someone from the larger community whose death was attributable to illness, accident, or violence.
