In their second game of the season, the Brooklyn Barons Rugby marched away with two more decisive victories. The Brooklyn Barons A and B sides beat Gotham RFC 38 - 0 and 60 - 0, respectively.
Gotham RFC, the 2007 Met Union runners up, couldn’t match the speed and powerful running of the Brooklyn sides in either games. Solid line-outs, some excellent scrums and a strong forward presence allowed the Brooklyn Barons to take advantage of the wide field and utilize their aggressive running style.
With smart back play, long breaks and supported drives the Brooklyn Barons A side put all their points on the board before half time. Five tries (5 points a piece), all of which were converted (2 points a piece) and one penalty kick (3 points) bringing the tally to 38. Flanker Garrick Anderson and inside center Toby Tornay scored two tries each, eight-man Matt Loomis scoring the fifth and scrum half Geoff Gordon converting all tries and successfully kicking the penalty.
The A side second half was sloppy; fatigue, wet field conditions and some mistakes lead to the Barons giving away 22 penalties. Their defense held however, and never let Gotham take advantage of their mistakes. Besides some well-placed penalty kicks by Gotham, which lead to line-outs close to the Barons try zone, Brooklyn were never pressured by Gotham.
The Brooklyn Barons B side took control of play early and never let up. Much faster and playing with more determination, they thoroughly trounced the Gotham B’s, putting 60 points past them. Brooklyn regularly out-flanked and out-ran Gotham with speed and clever use of full field width. The B side team looked comfortable and played clean smart rugby, that at many points made the A side second half look chaotic and rushed. A brace (2) of tries were scored by Tornay, Anderson, and speedy winger Tommy O’ Connor as Brooklyn put the Knights B-side to the sword.
