Urban life is stressful. Especially for women.
Every day we women are torn — there’s work, family, friends, and home. It’s a mountain of responsibility, and we’re always multi−tasking, as we try to balance the time we spend among them.
What’s often lost in the shuffle is time for us. There’s often no part of the day during which we can unwind and do something that brings us some peace of mind.
If you’re ready to carve out some time for yourself, join Silhouette Urban Mind⁄Body Fitness (530 86th Street, third floor loft, 718−748−7700), an exclusive health club for women.
The facility is designed to look like a spa, providing you with a sense of tranquility as soon as you enter. It was decorated by a Feng−shui artist, so that the environment is one that is harmonic, creating better flowing work stations, less tension, stress relief, and an increase in overall well−being, says Meryem Olgun, the general manager.
There are hardwood floors and mirrors throughout, a private sauna, a nutritionist, and a masseuse who is on call, should you want one.
The personal trainers are all “Level 4 Trainers,” says Meryem. That means they can assist with exercise techniques as well as nutrition. In addition, they have specialty training such as kickboxing, athletic training, or martial arts.
For those who want all the attention, a Pilates Reformer Program provides one−on−one Pilates sessions.
There are 26 classes offered each week, including five different types of yoga classes and five different types of dance classes. The latter includes belly dancing, hip hop, cardio−dance, Broadway dance, and salsa. Both the belly dancing and salsa classes have beginning, intermediate, and advanced sessions, so everyone feels comfortable, and everyone’s skills can grow.
In a hurry to tone up? There are several packages that can help. The Diamond Plan is for people looking to achieve a goal in six weeks, says Meryem. They’ll work with you to meet that goal. Other six−week programs include the Bridal Package, designed for you to get in shape for an upcoming wedding; the Pilates Performer Program; and the Athletic Training Program for athletes who need to get ready to compete.
One of the goals of Silhouette Urban Mind⁄Body Fitness is to make you feel comfortable. That’s why all members are provided with a personal representative, so they always have someone they can go to for answers; someone who will guide them along.
“Our customer service is absolutely beyond anything you will find in any health club,” says Meryem. “The staff is trained over and over again that the customer is always right.”
Meryem says she personally oversees the floor, making sure that women are exercising properly, and that trainers and staff are “always right there to help.”
Owner Bill Barba says, “We at Silhouette believe that the power of a fit body and mind contribute to the strength needed to pursue your life’s dreams, and to the endurance to meet any adversity head−on.”
It’s the “urban mind⁄body fitness” philosophy that helps counter balance the stressful urban lifestyle, he says. “We believe that by lending constant support to each and every woman who enters our facility, we will enable these women to find the inner strength, serenity and beauty that dwells inside of each one of them.”
Their mission statement is simply this: “To help women look and feel their best.” This goal is achieved by re−energizing in the fitness specialty classes, relaxing with a massage, and building strength through exercise.
All equipment is “top of the line,” and there’s a Juice Bar where you can relax and socialize after a workout. “All natural fruit and vegetable juices, Smoothies, and protein shakes” are served, says Meryem.
