The Red Hook experience could be yours — for the right price.
For four days following its first fundraiser to publicize its imminent arrival to the Red Hook waterfront, PortSide New York will hold an online auction with items that include: a tour up to the top of a gantry crane at the Red Hook container terminal, a private blacksmithing lesson at a Van Dyke Street shop, and a cast iron wood⁄coal stove circa 1916 from a home on Dikeman Street.
“The goal is to raise money and awareness of what we are doing,” said Carolina Salguero, PortSide’s founder and director. “We are trying to make the auction items reflect our mission and our style,” she added, noting more items are expected before the auction begins.
Other non−neighborhood specific items include two tickets aboard the city’s largest sailing charter vessel, The Clipper City, and tickets on the SeaStreak ferry from Manhattan to Sandy Hook.
“The tickets are reflective of the kind of experience you can be able to have right here in Red Hook and Atlantic Basin,” she predicted.
PortSide, a not for profit organization, is currently in negotiations with the city’s Economic Development Corporation, the quasi−public agency leading the waterfront plan. According to the EDC, it is working with PortSide to further develop its business plan, which will eventually see the creation of a maritime cultural hub.
PortSide is slated to occupy space at the southern end of the shed on Pier 11, and its old tanker, The Mary Whalen, will berth there as well.
“We are thrilled — in capital letters,” Salguero said.
The fundraiser will be held Saturday, June 13 from 6−9 p.m. at Brooklyn Lyceum, 227 Fourth Avenue. Tickets are $50. The event will include large−format multimedia installation, robust cheese + charcuterie, beer and wine.
