Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center and Millenium Sistahs, Inc., join forces to present their First Annual Health & Spirituality Summit for Women, September 18 at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center’s Lillian Minkin Ballroom from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Designed to address spiritual and health issues, which impact the ultimate well-being of women of the community, this event will expose issues most pervasive to a woman’s emotional, spiritual and physical health, such as HIV/AIDS, the church’s response to domestic violence, depression, breast health education and finding your spiritual self.
Key speakers include Professor Safiya Bendele, Medgar Evers College who will present “HIV & the Mature Woman” as well as Michelle Lopez, who will present “HIV %u2013 The Younger Women’s Perspective.” These presentations will address the staggering percentage of HIV/AIDS cases in Central Brooklyn affecting women, including elderly women over the age of 50.
Rev. Ken Bogan, Greater Restoration Baptist Church will present a riveting account of “the church’s neglect when it comes to domestic violence.” Kathleen Roberts, KJMC breast health educator will present “Breast Health Education,” facts as well as demonstrations on self examination, addressing the high incidence of breast cancer in our region.
Addressing the issue of depression, which affects five percent of our population is social worker and therapist Birdette Gardner, and “Finding Your Spiritual Self” will be presented by Claudette Spence, author of “Nurturing the Garden of Joy: Provocative Essays on Relationships.”
