Brooklyn South’s Got Talent! Show stoppers galore at Brooklyn College extravaganza

It may not have been “American Idol” or “America’s Got Talent,” but it was pretty close.

Enjoying one show-stopping number after the next, scores of fans thrilled to the beat and moved in their seats at Brooklyn College’s Walt Whitman Theater on March 11 during what is slowly becoming an annual extravaganza: Brooklyn South’s “Got Talent” show.

The talent show, sponsored by Patrol Borough Brooklyn South and the community councils representing the 13 precincts that Patrol Borough Brooklyn South oversees, made good on their promise of bringing two hours of fun and toe-tapping entertainment.

Each community council was asked to provide an entry for the talent show, which included singers and dancers from a variety of neighborhoods in southern Brooklyn.

Stand-out acts included members of the Brighton Ballet Theater who kicked up their heels during a special “Ukrainian Gopak” dance and magician and fire eater Nathan Thompson. The Brighton Ballet represented the 60th Precinct in Brighton Beach and Coney Island. Thompson was the 70th Precinct’s entry, highlighting the talent from Flatbush and Midwood.

But the night belonged to the singers. In true “American Idol” fashion, Regina Gavagan, representing the 63rd Precinct in Mill Basin, Samantha Battaglia, a student at P.S. 29 in the 76th Precinct in Carroll Gardens and Giancarlo Accetura, an Auxiliary Police Officer from the 62nd Precinct in Bensonhurst, all wowed the crowd by hitting high notes not dared by “Idol” winners Jordin Sparks and Kris Allen.

Yet the night’s highlight had to be Selena Redmon, an Explorer from the 78th Precinct, who belted out a song she wrote, entitled, “Baby I Tried.”

The night began with a tribute to victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Funds raised from the night of non-stop entertainment went to Brooklyn South community councils, organizers said.
