3rd Ward Calls For New Artist

3rd Ward is bigger than ever.

The Williamsburg gallery, located at 195 Morgan Ave., has announced its first show of the new year, the 2010 Winter Solo Show, which features a larger exhibition space and an expanded financial award for the winner.

“We look for big ideas both in size and ingenuity,” said 3rd Ward’s Nikki Bagli, who will have the responsibility of sorting through hundreds of entries. “We have such a large space. When you’re talking about NYC you’re usually limited by the amount of space you can provide. We have 35,000 square feet at Morgan avenue space so we can accommodate big projects.”

This year, the winner will receive a grant of $5,000 instead of $1,000, and will be offered an optional live/ work residency in Brooklyn for three months to work on their project prior to the show.

Since 2007, 3rd Ward Brooklyn has put together solo exhibitions for artists working in a variety of mediums from all over the world. Previous winners include Johanna Heldebro, Pim Palsgraaf, who brought taxidermied animals sprouting from buildings to the space, Selena Kimball who made a 30-foot panoramic collage with historic documents, photographer Sean Fader who created personalized body suits of the subjects he photographed and posed in them, sculptor Jeremy Leichman who included wry takes on American corporate culture, and Nate Green and Owen Shoppe who installed a working carousel and overlapping teeter-totters in 1,200 square feet of space.

“We’re really interested in seeing work in all mediums. We’re not looking for one type of work,” said Bagli. We’re looking for strong ideas and innovative new art.”

A judging panel featuring Paper Magazine’s Arts Director Carol Lee, sound artist Dan Deacon, esteemed street artist Rostarr, and Long Now Foundation Design Engineer Paolo Salvagione seem up to the challenge.

Artists are encouraged to fill out their submissions at www.3rdward.com/opencall by March 1, 2010, 11:59 pm. For more information, e-mail Nikki Bagli at nbagli@3rdWard.com.
