Today’s news:

Summer bummer: Irene ended weekend fun

Brooklyn Daily

Good night — thanks to Irene.

This weekend’s storm that couldn’t did put quite a scare into people before it huffed and puffed and tried to blow our brick house down, but even though no fatalities were reported during its visit, word of its impending arrival managed to kill off two borough traditions: the explosive conclusion to Battle Week and the Brighton Jubilee.

Nine commemorations marking the 235th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn — the Revolutionary War engagement where 400 Maryland soldiers died at what is now the Old Stone House in Park Slope as they bought time for Gen. George Washington and his troops to fall back to Manhattan — were scheduled to take place at the Old Stone House in Park Slope, Fort Greene Park and GreenWood Cemetery on Aug. 27 and 28, but were cancelled on Friday, including the always crowd-pleasing battle reenactment where blue-clad rebels fight off the Red Coats at GreenWood Cemetery’s main gate.

Plans for the 35th annual Brighton Jubilee, a street fair stretching along Brighton 15th Street from Brighton Beach Avenue to the Boardwalk, were abandoned on Thursday. Organizers had pushed back the Jubilee to Sept. 18.

Other Hurricane Irene postponements included:

• The Coney Island Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony planned for Aug. 28 has been rescheduled to Sept. 3.

• The Coney Island Generation Gap Soap Box Derby Race at Kaiser Park on Aug. 27 will now take place on Sept. 3.

• A family day at MeadowWood at Gateway on Flatlands Avenue in Canarsie has been moved to Sept. 10.

• The first annual Red Hook Star-Revue Music Festival, originally set for Aug. 28 has been postponed until Sept. 18.
