Queen of Bay Ridge: Victoria Rushtlion, 12, wore a royal crown to the celebration.
The princess twins: Twins Eleanor and Hannah Arbeeny, age 4, of Dyker Heights dazzled spectators with their pretty princess costumes.
The knight of Purim: Daniel Olshanitsky came to the Bay Ridge Jewish Center’s Purim celebration dressed as a medieval knight.
Batman, the dark advisor: Zach Goldberger, 5, is proud in his Batman costume with Rabbi Dina Rosenberg after his performance as the King’s advisor in the Bay Ridge Jewish Center’s Purim retelling.

Members of the Bay Ridge Jewish Center swapped their stodgy ties and stifling suits to don gay apparel from the days of biblical lore, as they reenacted the valiant Mordecai’s battles against evil king Haman in celebration of Purim on March 7.

As per Jewish tradition, Purim was celebrated at the center through a retelling of the classic tale, but instead of the usual oral history, Rabbi Dina Rosenberg decided that a play would be more to her audience’s liking.

“It was definitely a new spin on things, and it was very enjoyable,” said spectator Mara Olshanitsky.

But even better than costumed parents acting out the roles of biblical figuers, were the kids dressed as superheroes acting out the same roles in their retelling.

That’s right, after the parents were allowed their time in the spotlight, the real stars from the center’s Hebrew school came up and gave their own performance, but instead of dressing like Mordecai and Haman, they were dressed more like Batman and Prince Valiant.

“The way that they were reading their lines, it was so cute,” said Olshanitsky.
