The Brooklyn Cyclones are courting the borough’s hippest baseball fans by shattering an unwritten rule of hipster branding: never openly market to them.
The borough’s minor league ballers will host Williamsburg Night on July 3, offering discounts for bearded fans, skeeball tournaments, and skinny jeans races around the diamond.
Cyclones staffers say they hope hipster night sells out — even if the attendees swear they never will.
“Williamsburg is a group we typically haven’t been able to reach,” said Billy Harner, the director of communications for the ball club. “Hopefully this event will help them feel welcome at the ballpark.”
The Cyclones are even working with the Williamsburg watering hole Full Circle Bar to make the trip to Coney Island easier by providing a form of transportation perfect for those who think retro things are cool: old school buses.
Hipsters have a reputation for shying away from just about anything that directly acknowledges their hipsterism, but Brenna Ehrlich, co-author of “Stuff Hipsters Hate,” believes Williamsburg Night will dispel that silly mainstream notion.
“Hipster Night or no, isn’t there free beer for wearing skinny jeans and a beard? Hipsters would go to the opening of a Duane Reade (and did, on Bedford) if there’s free beer involved,” said Ehrlich in an e-mail interview. “Any sane human would.”
Harner says similar playful promotions have targeted other Brooklyn stereotypes, such as last season’s Park Slope Night, which featured free stroller parking and baby carrier races.
Sideshows, he said, are the name of the game for the Coney Island franchise.
“In the minor leagues, you have to try different things that will make each night fun,” Harner said. “We need to find ways to make the seventh game of the season different from the eighth game, and this is one way to do it.”
