GOP: Let’s turn southern Brooklyn red!

Brooklyn Daily

Southern Brooklyn Republicans want voters who are angry with disgraced state Sen. Carl Kruger to start seeing red, and they say they have the candidate — and the cash — that will push the area further to the right.

State Sen. Marty Golden says the special election for Kruger’s seat — a district borough Republicans have until now ignored — could cost more than $500,000 to win, but the GOP is willing to put up the money to see Brighton Beach attorney David Storobin, a 32-year-old first-time candidate, beat Councilman Lew Fidler (D–Marine Park).

“I think the race is going to be over $1 million for both sides,” Golden (R–Bay Ridge) said. “I know we’re going to spend a good number. We’re invested in Storobin.”

Southern Brooklyn has long been considered a democratic stronghold, but that changed last fall when Rep. Bob Turner (R–Sheepshead Bay) beat Assemblyman David Weprin (D–Queens) in the race to replace former democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner, who resigned following a cybersex scandal.

Nearly 66 percent of ballots in Kruger’s district were cast for Turner, who campaigned on an anti-President Obama, pro-Israel platform.

The Brooklyn GOP’s base of operations has been Bay Ridge for years, where GOP leaders include Golden, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R–Bay Ridge), and Rep. Michael Grimm (R–Bay Ridge), who beat Democratic incumbent Michael McMahon in 2010.

Golden’s senate district extends into Marine Park and Gerritsen Beach, but the five-term senator says he wants to spread the GOP’s influence even further, and the fall of Kruger last month created the opportunity to do so. Kruger resigned his seat just hours before he pleaded guilty to taking $1 million in bribes.

To move the seat into the red, Golden has put together a Republican dream team filled with GOP bigwigs and campaign professionals who helped get Turner (R–Sheepshead Bay) and Grimm in office — a group that includes former Staten Island Borough President and GOP powerhouse Guy Molinari.

Storobin, who is also vice chairman of the Kings County Republican County Committee, says Fidler supports gay marriage and tax hikes — decisions he claims will not resonate with the area’s growing Russian and Orthodox Jewish communities.

“He’s easily the most liberal politician in Southern Brooklyn,” Storobin said during a campaign kick-off celebration in Sheepshead Bay on Wednesday, where he appeared with Golden. “We’re tired of being represented by people who ignore what we believe in.”

Fidler, whose council district overlaps Kruger’s old stomping grounds, has been laying the groundwork for his campaign since Kruger was indicted. He already has more than $331,000 in his war chest, making him — at least so far — the financial front-runner in an area where Democrats outnumber Republicans by a margin of three-to-one.

Storobin hasn’t told the state Board of Elections how much he’s raised, but those close to the candidate told the Politicker, a political blog, that he’s cobbled together about $120,000 — $50,000 of which came from his own pocket.

The special election is scheduled for March 20.

To quote Daniel Bush, above: Fidler " already has more than $331,000 in his war chest, making him — at least so far — the financial front-runner in an area where Democrats outnumber Republicans by a margin of three-to-one."
Maybe one can consider Fidler the financial front-runner BUT $88,550 of Fidler's $331,000 war chest was money Fidler was/is supposed to return to taxpayers from his 2009 campaign. He's abused our system of public funding once--and he will do it again if given the chance. Do NOT give Fidler a second chance. We need new untainted blood in politics. Read Daily News Editorial, November 8, 2009, 'Fidler on the hook.' It details Fidler's thievery. He is a Democrook.

Martin from Brooklyn says:
Rumor has it that issues that were raised in Senator Marty Golden’s office and pushed by several members of his staff have further fractured the already broken Brooklyn GOP.

As evidence I submit an email that has made its rounds by being forwarded to several GOP insiders. The orginal author would shock and scare most GOPers in BKLYN. The sentiment of the following text is not an isolated one I can assure you.

Let’s see what happens next…

email text:

Gotta be honest, I don’t see the point anymore in going all out for anyone anymore. It’s clear that they’re about aiding and helping Democrats and keeping their shrinking positions which they will eventually lose. I would help specific ADs that’s about it. The Brooklyn GOP within 10 years will be Manhattan and the Bronx, but that’s the way they want it.

On another note, David Storobin is a throw-away candidate.

Marty Golden (the State Senator) wants to appear to support republicans when in reality he is hoping (we all know hope isn't needed) that David Storobin will get beaten by BK GOP friend Lew Fidler.

The last candidate they ran against Fidler was Gene Beradelli who was so badly trounced that he went underground for over a year afterwards.

Golden (actually more likely Gerald Kassar) is planning to run an orthodox Jew in November for the newly redistricted seat. This is after Golden strip-mines a few "Jew EDs" (as him and his staff call them) for his own newly gerry (kassar)-mandered district.

Ding dong as the saying goes.

Raymond from Bay Ridge says:
If you think about it the likes of Kassar, Golden, O'Brien are more about aiding their Democrat allies in the state legislature such as Peter Abbate, Bill Colton, and Alec-Brock Krasny then actually helping build a stronger Republican bench in those areas where Republican voting patterns have been increasing making these incumbents potentially vulnerable.

Which only makes one wonder if it's coincidence all three of the aforementioned names are some of Vito Lopez's strongest allies in the state assembly and the Brooklyn Democratic party.

Not to mention didn't Gerry O'Brien work for longtime Brooklyn GOP friends Dan Donovan and Bob Turner's opponents in recent elections?

So much for helping the party.

David Storobin can you say roadkill?

Hey Milty-

There is not public matching funds for state leg candidates. Better read up and do your homework rather then spread BS. Lew Fidler did have an opponent in 2009. Not my fault he sucked. Fidler didnt steal taxpayer money in public funds. He was given in by the NYCCFB because he did have an opponent and so therefore he is entitled to matching funds just as his opponent was.

So cut the crap. Fidler is one of the best elected officials out there. Why dont you actually do your homework and know what you type out before spreading lies and hate.

Good day.

Willard from Shaolin says:
Lew Fidler is a disgrace. Storobin will hopefully mop the floor with this democrat hack like Turner did with Weprin.

Finally Russian Americans will have a voice in the state legislature. I know that is not what any democrats want to hear and even some republicans for that matter.

Too bad though. See you fools in march.

I want more russians in office but i need people who will better the community i live in, not run soley on party lines. Fidler is everywhere at every meeting and answers calls when you need help. Certified by the Campaign Finance Board: Brooklyn Councilman Lew Fidler ripped off the taxpayers to the tune of $88,550.

Jon from Mill Basin says:
Hey Milty-

Rather than read an editiorial why dont you get off your ass and ask the NYCCFB (http://www.nyccfb.info/). They were the ones that issued the public matching funds you speak of to the Fidler Campaign. Fidler didnt just "steal" the money like you state. He applied for it and was granted it. If it was that big a problem as you state then the NYCCFB would have said no.

BTW, your article link even states "certified by the Campaign Finance Board.."

So there you have it. Why aren't you blaming them? They issued it.

I know...because your real name is Gene and you ran an embarrassing campaign against Lew (when he got the matching funds you question and I believe you couldnt qualify to get because you didnt get enough community support) and now seek vengeance w ur bs comments and jig blog posts.

Boom Roasted.

Please, Jonny--Copy / Paste the above site to learn who Fidler's friends are. Corrupt Vito Lopez has endorsed Fidler--that alone is enough to shed light on the man. How can we respect someone who owes money but refuses to return it, when asked? May I respectfully ask that YOU get off your *ss and do some research. Open your eyes to the truth, Jonny.

To Mark from Sheepsheadbay:
Fidler had been to every civic, every community meeting, etc., because that is his job, to get to know what his community wants and needs. Yes, he's good at showing his face, but...
that has not been Storobin's job.
I am quite sure that Storobin will do the same thing when elected, schmooze with his constituents.
