Today’s news:

Checkin’ In With City Council Candidate Mark Treyger

Quick on the Treyger! We’ve got questions — and City Council candidate has answers

Brooklyn Daily

New Utrecht High School teacher Mark Treyger, an aide to Assemblyman Bill Colton (D–Bensonhurst), says he wants to replace the term-limited Domenic Recchia (D–Coney Island), whose district encompasses the People’s Playground, Gravesend, Sea Gate, and parts of Bath Beach and Treyger’s native Bensonhurst. We talked to him about the issues that move him, and how he’ll overcome the bumps on the campaign trail ahead — which include two Democratic rivals and the fact that he’s not currently living inside the recently redrawn district lines.

Will Bredderman: So what do you believe is the most pressing problem facing the district?

Mark Treyger: The city’s plan to put a waste transfer station on Gravesend Bay at the end of Bay 41st Street. It presents a danger to our community and will be a very big issue for me. A recent study found Mirex — an insecticide they used to spray down the old incinerator that used to be in that location to kill roaches, and which has been shown to be highly toxic— as well as arsenic in the sediment there, along with other chemicals. The dredging the city will have to do will unearth and release 30 years of pollution, and God forbid we get another storm, mold will have company in people’s basements and homes. It isn’t just a Bensonhurst issue, it’s a Southern Brooklyn issue. It will pollute the beaches of Coney Island and Sea Gate, and it’s more dangerous than people know. I’ve been on the frontlines of the fight against this for several years, and I’ll continue that fight in the City Council.

WB: How do you feel about the city’s plan to convert the Coney Island Boardwalk to concrete and plastic? And about the proposal to build a casino in the neighborhood?

MT: How can you have anything but a wooden Boardwalk? That’s my childhood and the childhoods of so many other people. We can’t build a sidewalk there. And I oppose the casino because I think it’s too risky for the neighborhood. Right now we need less glitz and glamor in Coney Island, and more meeting the basic needs of the people. We need improved sewers and focus on beach restoration to protect against another storm, we need to repair the police stationhouse and bring people back to normalcy, and we need to clean up Coney Island Creek.

WB: Your opponents, activist Todd Dobrin and Council Speaker Christine Quinn aide John Lisyanskiy, have already accused one another of being unfit to hold the seat. What makes you a better contender than either of them?

MT: I’m not going to attack the character of anyone I’m running against, but I believe my experiences and credentials working as an educator, leading the United Progressive Democrats, and working with Assemblyman Colton uniquely qualify me for the job. My approach has always been to work with the whole community to solve neighborhood problems. Going to City Council is just a continuation of the work I’ve been doing all these years.

WB: If I’m right, though, you don’t currently live inside the district. How can you run if that’s the case?

MT: I’ve lived in the Waterview Towers on Cropsey Avenue for 30 years, which were just cut out of the district this year. I’m currently looking for another apartment in Bensonhurst, and should be moving soon. But regardless of where the lines are drawn, the issues remain the same.

Fred sounds like Recchia "puppet".
This shows the residents of the district that Recchia's
" puppet " Fred, is desperate.
Mark will take the high road not the low road & attack any of the other candidates running for Council.
Mark will run on his record of achievements, which there are many.

Irina from Coney Island says:
Coney Island should only be so lucky to have a politician groomed by Colton. I have to say one thing about him and every one of his staff - they serve the community, unlike the do-nothings that we have around here who only show up when there is a party. You are right that they are "isolated" - isolated from the rest of the do-nothings that suck up to the big real estate money guys who think that they own southern Brooklyn.
March 13, 2013, 4:37 pm
Jack from Bensonhurst says:
The only answer Treyger has is that one from Bill Colton, the guy is afraid of his own shadows. Where were they after the Storm? Did anyone see them in Coney Island or anywhere else along the cost line and even on Cropsey avenue where Treyger lives? People were and still are suffering and they worry about the damn garbage station for the last 8 years. Watch Treyger change his tune, so out of touch! Vote Todd Dobrin!

sal from coney island says:
Travis : If you have never heard of Mark Treyger you must be living under a rock , for the past 10 years.
Mark has a very long record of Community service .
Mark Treyger is very well respected by many elected officials, throughout the City. From US Senator Schumer , NYS Comptroller Di Napoli , Congressman Nadler among others.
Mark Treyger can't be bought , like many of the other local elected officials by the big developers.
He will be a great public servant & not a self-serving elected , that we have had for far too long.
" What's Coming is Better than What has Been "
March 13, 2013, 5:23 pm
Jessica from Bensonhurst says:
Jack - you should be THANKING Colton & Treyger for fighting against that garbage station for the past 8 years! If it weren't for them, it would have been built and in operation already, causing traffic nightmares and infesting our air and water with toxic chemicals. Did you forget the toxic ash the old garbage incinerator used to spew into the air? The cancer rates in the areas near the incinerator skyrocketed because of that toxic ash in the air that people were breathing! If it wasn't for Colton or Treyger, the waters of Gravesend Bay, Coney Island, Brighton & Manhattan Beaches, and Sheepshead Bay would have highly toxic chemicals like arsenic in them right now!

Genevieve from Gravesend says:
You people need to stop your mindless banter and let the best man for the job win. Vote with your conscious for a change. Stop being a capitalist lackey pig for big business. While you're at it, it wouldn't hurt to go back to school and learn how to spell too. Loose lips lose elections.
Be careful. Big brothers always watching. And this time he's one the side of justice, that means- NOT YOURS

Phil from Coney Island says:
I heard Recchia is supporting a candidate Lewis Jerome any confirmation on this or does anyone who he is?
March 13, 2013, 11:33 pm
Jasmine from Bensonurst says:
I heard that Mark Treyger is a good educator, and he should not be submissive and abandon his students to satisfy his master Colton. Mark has no independence and that will translate into failed representation and lack of cooperation. This has been the trend of Colton for many years simply put these guys do not play well with others and without support and cooperation of colleagues in government you simply can not be effective.
March 14, 2013, 11:32 am
Irina from Coney Island says:
I have heard of Lewis (or is it Louis?) Jerome. He is a well known member of the Sephardic community, like Joe Sitt, that other Recchia buddy. These are the people who live in those gorgeous palaces along Ocean Pkwy. Recchia has been bringing Jerome around to a lot of meetings & introducing him as the person who will succeed him on the City Council. And here we all thought that Lisyanskiy had been crowned, while all the time, it was Lewis (Louis) Jerome. Jerome's family owns JEMB Real Estate, one of the largest real estate development/investment/management/control firms in the Northeast & Canada. They are involved in some of the choicest real estate around. They are even involved in the casinos in Atlantic City and have interests in power plants. Lewis (Louis) Jerome is a Bloomberg clone - if you have mountains of money behind you, you can buy anything, including a policial dynasty. I guess he can "play well with others" and "support & cooperate" with "colleagues in government" - the Jeromes are big, really big, donors to the Recchia & Greenfield political campaigns, just check out the NYC Campaign Finance Board website.
March 14, 2013, 12:17 pm
Brian from Coney says:
I heard that Irina posting here is Todd Dobrin!!! Now he got really screwed by Colton and Treyger. He was running and thinking they are his friends and will support him and now got dumped on. Rude awakening. Lisyanskiy is the only real and serious candidate who unmistakably will be the preferred choice of the people once they learn more about the full line up. All the false rumors will now be put to rest and the truth will come out. He owes nothing to Czar Recchia or Deputy Emperor Quinn -- was never part of any patronage and actually knows the job and what he is talking about.
March 14, 2013, 12:54 pm
Chuck from Brighton says:
It is a shame, Greenfield is following Recchia footsteps. He also will be rememberd as the most corrupt and selfish man, who portrays himself as a religious person. Both of them will join Kruger one day.
March 14, 2013, 1:32 pm
Carl from Gravesend says:
Chuck you are wrong! Greenfield has been walking Recchia on a leash for a very long time! way before he was even a member of the council. Sell outs! and do not think Colton is a saint! he cozied up to that Greenfield person also very tight. Now Treyger will end up a scapegoat, Colton made a deal to get the Jerome guy in.
March 14, 2013, 3:46 pm
Joey from Bensonhurst says:
Colton made a deal to get that Jerome guy in? Now that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard in my life. Colton has been fighting for southwestern Brooklyn on many real issues, unlike Recchia and the other phonies who show up for a photo-op or to shake hands and then disappear when the people of the neighborhood need them. Recchia and his friends are only in this business for what they can get out of it. Colton has dedicated his entire life to public service and it shows in the overwhelming support he receives from the people. One day Recchia's corrupt politics will land him in jail.
March 14, 2013, 5:06 pm
Genevieve from Bensonhurst says:
Teachers work with and educate neighborhood children. They also have a solid sense of the socio-economic issues facing families. I think it's about time somone who has actually PROVEN to benefit our community gets the credit he deserves. We need someone who speaks out for WORKING PEOPLE instead of selling them out to big businessess and puppet corporate lobbyists disguising as caring politicians.
Regardless of whose a "crony" for whom...One cannot deny the dedication, loyalty, and community service of Treyger. He's a real community, not some prissy silver-spoon fed poor rich boy.
March 14, 2013, 8:30 pm
Doris from Gravesend says:
Our public school teachers are some of the most hardworking, committed people of our great city. And anyone who is willing to stand up against Bloomberg and his cronies (since you all want to talk about "cronies") deserves a round of applause. By taking a stand against this dangerous garage station, and against King Bloomberg and his puppet Christine Quinn, Mark has already shown he is not afraid to stand up to the powerful big interests if it means protecting and fighting for the people of our great neighborhood. Thank you Mark and Assemblyman Colton for having COURAGE and showing the rest of our no-show, corrupt elected officials what true community leaders are!
March 14, 2013, 8:45 pm
Tamara from Brighton says:
My close friend works for assemblymen Krasniy. He told me that his boss and Reccia are lying to Ari Kagan and John Lisyansky about supporting them. Instead, together with Greenfield they will back sephardic jews for city council, because they are on their payroll.
March 14, 2013, 10:31 pm
Jackie from Bensonhurst says:
Our entire block will vote for Mark who is there for us, not like other corrupt politicians. Mark is for middle class working families. He will not sell us out to rich developers and their attack dogs.
March 15, 2013, 7:47 am
Rob from Gravesend says:
People want leadership and experience that they can trust. No one in this race except Lisyanskiy has what it takes to move this community forward and get the real results. Those who did not know John were skeptical at first, but not after meeting him. People thought he was a Recchia guy, well he did work in the Council for 15 years and that made him look like a Recchia guy. But he did not get his job because of Recchia, and he does not owe anything to Recchia or anyone else for the matter. John is a solid well educated, intelligent and deeply experienced guy who knows how the Government works, who knows how to get things done and who cares enormously about the residents of this district and our city. As I heard John say, Public and Governmental work is not a hobby, and should not be left to be executed by amateurs, cheerleaders and activists, its a major responsibility that affects people's daily lives and you want a true professionals to carry out this very important work. Folks should not try to bust a career move at the expense of our residents, and better stick to what they know how to do best, educators should be educating, electricians should stick to the electric work, trust fund babies should run wild in Miami beach. Stop meddling in the business that you do not belong in! TALK IS CHEAP, if you developed a stump speech, that does not make you a qualified candidate.
March 19, 2013, 10:51 am
Pat from Brighton says:
Todd should only stick to electrical work? Then John should stick to chasing an invisible track record. Nobody ever heard of this phony before he wanted to run. Only attended meetings when he wanted to run.Never spoke a word at a cb meeting. Never organized on community issues. Works for one of the worst and selfish politicians Christine Quinn who is Bloomberg's puppet. And out of all of the places that needed help after Sandy he conveniently decided to ONLY help Warbasse. What about Seagate? What about Gravesend? Todd was EVERYWHERE and for EVERYONE FOR YEARS!
March 19, 2013, 1:13 pm
Barbara from Trump Village says:
Craig, why didn't John help us in Trump? He never came here! We were hit just as bad as everyone else! Is it because Trump is no longer in the area John is running in? So if we can't vote for him we are not worth his time? Does John have any community or political support? Many community leaders I speak to are supporting Todd and you can check them out here http://dobrinforny.com/endorse.htm
March 19, 2013, 5:13 pm
Carolyn from Coney Island says:
We, in Coney Island will not vote for Lisyanskiy. Who is this guy? I heard that he is Bloomberg's friend, and will not do anything for us, minorities in the area.
March 20, 2013, 7:50 am
sal from coney island says:
...Getting back to this new Recchia "puppet" Louis Jerome running for office. I was at a meeting last night at Lincoln HS on the rebuilding of Coney Isalnd , Brighton Beach & other shore communties in South Brooklyn.
Louis Jerome was there & I observed all night long that he was more interested in what was on his IPhone that what was being said by the presentation. He looked very bored . Livng in the affluent community of Ocean Parkway and around Ave S & T , I know he couldn't relate to any of the issues that were being discussed.
Has Louis Jerome ever summered in Coney Island ? Is he a stakeholder in Coney Island ? The answer is NO & NO.
Louis Jerome does his summers in an exclusive affluent beach resort in Deal, New Jersey.
If Louis Jerome thinks his & his relatives monies can buy him a seat at the City Council , I & many others don't think so.
It doesn't work that way. Not here.
The residents of the district ( Coney Island, Gravsend, Bensonhurst won't fall for that ploy.
We need a Council member who can put themselves into the shoes of the residents of the district NOT Another Bloomberg-like candidate who can buy his way into the Council!
March 20, 2013, 10:18 am
Igor from Bensonhurst says:
Rob from Gravesend, are you kidding??????

What has John done for the people of Bensonhurst? John appeared after Sandy. Mark Treyger has been working and fighting for us for at least 10 years, alongside Colton. He spearheaded and helped with the Lafayette situation...even visiting one of the victims at the ER. He helps organize neighborhood clean ups. He fought to help restore the B64 bus line. He's fighting to stop the incinerator. Treyger has helped thousands of people, more than some elected officials. He is a great educator...who educates our children everyday...and is in touch with the reality of what's going on in the resident's everyday lives. He knows the issues, and he is a fighter.
The people of Bensonhurst want someone like Treyger on our side. Treyger has, is and will always fight for the people!!! He has a proven track record in our community. What does Lisyanskiy have? Besides appearing on the scene after Sandy, what has he done for us? He should stick to what he does best...brown nosing.
March 20, 2013, 8:09 pm
Genevieve from Gravesend /Bensonhurst says:
The reality is there's only one genuine candidate out there. Not only does he have personal electability, he has been the backbone behind the UPDC since 2000. I know this because I've seen and been a benefactor of his community efforts. Thanks to him a corrupt, embezzler was removed from being a public school principal, and thousands of students have been exposed to core citizenship values and the embodiment of a selfless leader-a statesman if you will. This is the kind of person government leadership has been thirsting for. An honest political. Sounds like an oxymoron but in Treygers case, it's who is really is.
Others talk and throw money and names at problems in order to deflect from the fact that they DO NOTHING. In Treygers case, actions have definitely spoken louder than words.
March 20, 2013, 10:13 pm
Barbara from Trump Village says:
Craig, I never saw John anywhere in Trump! How does writing a note on his website help us? Todd still helps us even though its not in the district! Todd is more of a leader than John will ever be! and it shows by the amount of support Todd has and the zero community support John has!
March 20, 2013, 10:37 pm
CAROLYN from CONEY ISLAND says:
reccia told us to support this guy jerome. he brings jerome to coney island to introduce him to some preachers. but we will support dobrin, since he supports working poor and african american causes.
March 20, 2013, 10:48 pm
Morris from Coney island says:
Sal... Jerome is a Bloomberg like candidate? Try again! Rob... trust fund baby? The Jeromes should not be punished for their success. You will get to know them and their good work soon enough. The reason why this John is going nowhere is because he is not trustworthy and loyal. Why is he bad mouthing his boss Christine Quinn to people in Coney Island? An employee who bad mouths his boss behind their back has a credibility problem. Why isn't John promoting his boss for mayor in Coney Island? Don't think people didn't notice that. The very same people you spent months chasing for support. Not happening. You are going nowhere really fast
March 20, 2013, 11:22 pm
sal from coney island says:
Morris..
Louis Jerome is a DO NOTHING , DONE NOTHING ,RICH BOY ! Reccia's main conributors are Jeromes family & friends.
He holds onto to his daddy's deep rich pockets !
He's not fooling anyone.
His father Joe Jerome has interests in Atlantic City casinos & Atlantic City has dropped off its revenues by over 15%. That's why they are against casinos coming to Coney Island.
Money ! Money ! & More Money !
The community of Deal NJ will have to pay much more in real estate taxes due to the fall off of revenue from Atlantic City casinos.
People are stupid . Just go to & google Joseph Jerome & find out what he's really about.
March 21, 2013, 11:03 am
Irina from Coney Island says:
Sal is right - Follow The Money! Little Louis Jerome is just a little rich kid. He is a "Bloomberg candidate" because like Mayor Mike, he is BUYING elective office. When you or your family have mountains of money, you can buy anything. The Jeromes have done great work - for their own kind. They are featured big time, in the special, fancy, glossy magazines that you can get only in their community. All of a sudden Little Louis Jerome and his family care so much about the struggles of the people of Coney Island? A little donation here, a little funding for a program there? What a bunch of phonies! Recchia is dragging Little Louis Jerome all around in Coney Island making sure that he gets photographed hugging people of color to show that he is just a regular guy. But they're not fooling anyone. Follow The Money!
March 21, 2013, 12:50 pm
Sam from Coney says:
Dobrin biggest clown around! Treyger couldn't take a piss without Colton holding his peepee! Chang Wee for city Council!
March 21, 2013, 1:29 pm
Vadim from Gravesend says:
I agree with Sal and Irina. Recchia sold us out in favor of his wealthy contributors. We the people of Gravesend know that he's a phony and Jerome is some rich kid who wants to buy his seat in the city council. They are all about the money and power, not about the people. I wish that people would open their eyes and realize what is really going on here. Jerome and his team are buying support. Their only concern is the casino business. They could care less that we the people are hurting. What has Recchia and Jerome done for us? And they want our votes? HELL NO
March 21, 2013, 1:30 pm
Quinn from Chelsea says:
John Im very disappointed that you didn't deliver Coney Island for me! I am hearing that you are bad mouthing me to Coney Island people. The people you were sucking up to for years screwed you by supporting Jerome! I know that you were at the Shorefront club dinner and witnessed them endorsing Bill Thompson instead of me! Why didn't you tell me John? Well I also know they took Jerome around table to table asking their members to support Louis. How did it feel at Assemblyman Krasny's fundraiser to hear Recchia say he will be supporting someone else for his seat? Since you screwed me I will follow the footsteps of Recchia Krasny Cymbrowitz Greenfield and endorse Louis Jerome for City Council!
March 21, 2013, 2:21 pm
Jerome from Ocean Parkway says:
What kind of an idiot would write that about John and Quinn? Are you smarter than a fifth grader? It's like saying Todd likes to play for another team. Why didn't you tell us Todd? Don't be a coward, time to crawl out!
March 21, 2013, 3:17 pm
Al from Bensonhurst says:
Mark Treyger never accomplished a single action in this community that he can solely take credit for. Master Colton always lead the heard pack. Treyger being good foot soldier for Colton is a trained educator who unwillingly is getting shoved into a lion's cage. The little rabbit that he is will get ripped into pieces. This is not your 1960 community political club and not your political history books. Recchia and boys don't play around, they destroy people's lives ruin their families and erase their future. You could be a school principal one day, just have to say no to Colton and this losing proposition.
March 21, 2013, 3:32 pm
sal from coney island says:
To Al.... I couldn't sum up your opinion of " Recchia & boys " better than you just did. A bunch of BUMS !
But you something Al...Karma is a ——.
What goes around comes around.
I can't wait till the 2014 Congressional race , when Recchia gets his assed kicked , from the Staten Islanders.
My advice to the Democratic Congressional Committee , don't waste your money on Recchia...he's a loser.
Didn't have the guts to run for Comptroller or Brooklyn Beep. He's great at demeanig women though. A real Man !
That's the DNA Recchia is made out of..and his "puppet" candidate Louis Jerome is made from the same cloth.
March 21, 2013, 3:42 pm
jerry from gravesend says:
I'm sure people know of the $ 150 million Sephardic Community Center on Ocean Parkway & Ave.S. Paid for by both private & public monies.
Well...since Louis Jerome is such a caring person & knows all about the residents of Coney Island , and is a member & his family & friends are on the Board of Directors of the $ 150 million Sephardic Community Center , why aren't there any young African American kids belonging to this center ?
Why aren't there any African American Adults members at this Center ?
And the Survey says... Not Welcome !
Louis Jerome is a real BS artist.
March 21, 2013, 3:56 pm
Igor from Bensonhurst says:
Al from Bensonhurst - you need to crawl out of the rock that you've been living under for the past decade. You don't know what you're talking about. You sound like a wanna be bully. Recchia and the boys??? oh please...the only place where Recchia and his boys are going to go is to JAIL because they are corrupt. And everybody knows it. Poor John Lisanskiy just got ripped to shreds by Recchia and his boys when they dumped him in support of Jerome. I guess Recchia and his boys just erased Lisyanskiys future. He has no chance. He should start looking for a new job.
March 21, 2013, 5:12 pm
jerry from gravesend says:
Oh by the way....I just cjecked it out on the web...Recchia gave out in 2010 over $ 250,000 to the Sephardic Community Center... that was 2010 ,what about 2011 & 2012 ?
If Public Money (our tax money) is being given out to the non-profit Sephardic Community Center ALL THE PEOPLE OF THE DISTRICT SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO GO TO AND BE PART OF THE COMMUNITY CENTER INCLUDING THOSE THAT LIVE IN CONEY ISLAND.
March 21, 2013, 5:32 pm
Irina from Coney Island says:
Al, let me make sure that I understand you. You say that Recchia and "his boys" ..."destroy people's lives, ruin their families and erase their future"? OMG, that sure sounds like a thug. Are you saying that Dom is really a Don?
March 21, 2013, 6:50 pm
Jay from Trump says:
Todd Dobrin biggest deuch bag! What team is he playing for? Does he have a wife and kids? Is he closeted? Slimiest creature of all. Glad Colton knocked him over, couldn't stand his face or voice around the club. Not fond of Treyger also, this guy is not up to this level. Lou Jerome is coming to get them all!! Everyone has a price!
March 22, 2013, 9:37 am
sal from coney island says:
Hey Jay from Trump....What's your price?
March 22, 2013, 11:20 am
charlie from Benshonhurst says:
Jay from Trump- who is not up to what level? Treyger is not corrupt and can't be bought - he does not have a price. So if you are talking about that he's not up to the level of being a sell out and corrupt, then I agree. The people of the district need someone who will stand up and fight with us and for us. We don't need another money bag who is only in it to make more money bags. TREYGER IS OUR MAN.
March 22, 2013, 4 pm
Angela from Gravesend says:
Someone above decided they wanted to talk about Treyger and Colton's bathroom habits. Well, if you want to discuss that topic, let's not forget that every time King Bloomberg takes a crap, our Councilman Recchia is there to wipe his backside after being handed toilet paper by puppet Quinn.

Now we all know why Recchia's hands are always so dirty.
March 22, 2013, 4:08 pm
Irina from Coney Island says:
Well said Angela! Now that's what I call telling it to someone the BROOKLYN way! Do you hear me applauding? Can you hear me cheering? That is the best darn reply I have ever heard in my life!
March 22, 2013, 5:38 pm
Jack from Benson says:
Todd Dobrin is again having conversation with himself!! This is how one develops multi personality disorder! It's time for a shrink! Do your friends know that you are a psycho?
March 22, 2013, 5:54 pm
Angela from Gravesend says:
Actually, Mr. Jack, I can assure you, with all certainty, that I am only Angela and not Irina. Unlike Mr. Recchia and his cronies, I am not two-faced.

Plus, I only live in one house, in one neighborhood. Again, unlike Mr. Recchia, I don't own a house in Gravesend and then a million dollar summer vacation home in the Hamptons.

Then again, maybe if I was two-faced, representing people in the City Council and also suing the same City on behalf of my law firm, then I could be two different people, owning two different homes, in two different neighborhoods. But I guess we all can't be so lucky.
March 22, 2013, 11:42 pm
carolyn from coney island says:
luis jerome,we just receive new information about your families finances, and the corruption in sefardic center on ocean pkwy. if you decide to run , we are going to the press.some lady is right, we will enroll 1000 black people in your center.
March 23, 2013, 8:31 am
Kevin from Bensonhurst says:
I don't trust John Lisyanskiy or this Louis Jerome character. Lisyanskiy was only really around after Hurricane Sandy. Before that, he really never did anything for the community. He shows up to meetings and things like that, but where's the real track record? What has he really done? I give him credit for helping people after Sandy, but besides that, his list of public service accomplishments runs dry. It's just a list. No substance, no real results.

The other problem is that Lisyanskiy had already made a decision to run for City Council when he was helping people after Sandy. So, were his motives really to help people just for the sake of helping people, or was he helping people so he could then promote it in the press and all over Facebook (which he did)?

I never heard of Louis Jerome until a few weeks ago. Lisyanskiy may have done some things for the community, but this Jerome character has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. He has no credentials or qualifications to be elected as our City Councilman. You can't expect to just show up months before an election after never doing anything to help our community and believe that you can be elected as our public official. And the fact that Recchia has been going around with him all over Coney, further proves to me this Jerome guy is only seeking to help himself and not the people.

Treyger hasn't been planning a Council race for years, unlike the rest of the guys running. From what I've been told, he went back to school, got his second Master's and his School Supervisor's license. He's been teaching at New Utrecht and I heard he was really planning on becoming a school principal. With that information, I have reason to believe that all Treyger has done for our community wasn't simply to just help him get elected to something. Treyger is involved with different community issues all the time, but he's a humble young man who doesn't always post everything on Facebook or send it to the press. He's not looking to be constantly in the spotlight because his reasons are more genuine than the other candidates.

Treyger has a more genuine track record than the rest, although Dobrin also has done a lot for the community. I give credit where credit is due. But again, Todd has been running for Council for years, just like Lisyanskiy. It makes you question his motives also.

Treyger has been involved in the community because he believes it is the right thing to do. That, in my book, says something: he isn't putting his own interests above the interests of the community. Plus, he's a real down to earth, middle class guy.

I know who I am voting for in September and November.

Sam from Bensonhurst says:
Treyger has only as much track record as Colton is willing to chip away. There is zero Treyger can show that will outshine the Master Colton. He is a small time puppy and god help us should he get elected this year. He is as good as a back up wedding singer. Seen this character Dobrin around the club, what a joke, didn't sound like he shoots straight. Todd is one sleazy fellow.
March 23, 2013, 10:14 pm
Lana from Gravesend says:
Sam from Bensonhurst needs to wake up and smell the coffee. Mark Treyger has and is doing a lot of things for our community. After Hurricane Sandy, he gathered and organized a huge clean up with 400 students from his High School. This was not publicized or plastered all over Facebook. It's not all about the media with Treyger unlike Lisyanskiy. Lisyanskiy needs to buy the media because he is a NOBODY in our community. His masters cut off the strings and now he's very upset and bitter. We don't need this NOBODY representing us. We need a REAL person that is doing things for us. I know who my community is voting for MARK TREYGER.
March 24, 2013, 9:52 am
Sam from Bensonhurst says:
Lana just like Treygers record this is a big lie about 400 volunteers. Liars, liars, liars. And what a coward, as misguided as he is with the rest of his priorities he chose to clean the shore instead of going out to help people who were suffering, who had no food, water, heat and electric who lost everything in their homes who needed help gutting mold infested apartments. Sure attack Lisyanskiy, I know all about him be scared and worried. This is one person in the race who stands out not just for his experience and knowledge of government but someone who proved he is not a coward and when it's time to roll up the sleeves and help and walk the walk he is there for the people not the birds. Amateurs should be kept as far away as possible from any position of power as it becomes a terrible waste and people suffer because of that. Treyger just like Dobrin are fake opportunistic community advocates who operate primarily on convenience. This will not fly with the voters. People are not as dumb as you may think Lana Treyger Dobrin.
March 24, 2013, 11:29 am
Irina from Coney Island says:
Sam - and everyone else out there - do an internet search & you'll see that Treyger has been quietly working with people to make Bensonhurst & Gravesend a better place for years. He didn't sit back & wait for a disaster which he could turn into a press opportunity.

Clarification: Treyger never "cleaned the shore" - he cleaned up NEIGHBORHOODS. When people complained that 86th St. & other shopping strips were filthy, Tryeger didn't just talk & get his picture taken. He did something about it!

The "400 volunteers" Sam refers to, showed up not once, not twice, but multiple times to clean & sweep not one, but ALL of the shopping strips in the neighborhood. Not only that, but these wonderful young people went into the stores & spoke to the shopkeepers about how important a clean, attractive shopping strip was not only for their businesses, but good for the entire neighborhood. Even more amazingly, these clean ups involved people from a variety of ethnic groups and cultures. Everyone wanted to get involved! It was really amazing how Treyger brought so many diverse people together.

Re: Lisyanskiy, my friends attend numerous meetings in the area. Lisyanskiy is rarely at any of them. And when he does show up he doesn't say a word. He has "knowledge of government"??? He's nothing more than Christine Quinn's political hack. But he doesn't have to worry. Quinn is going places and he can just sit back & ride her coat tails to another easy, cushy job.
March 24, 2013, 12:16 pm
Lana from Gravesend says:
Sam from Bensonhurst aka John Lisyanskiy, people are not as stupid as YOU think. The only one who is a coward is you. What have you done for us? Instead of attacking everyone else's record, tell us what have YOU done. You only came on the scene after Sandy. You only provided some assistance to certain buildings probably because Master Recchia advised you to do so. Now your Master has dumped you and you are all alone. You have nobody to back you. Stick to your financial analyst job. You are not cut out for representing the people. You should stick to sitting behind a desk and computer and brown nosing your bosses. You have no track record with our community. You are a phony, opportunistic LIAR. So do yourself a favor and QUIT DREAMING. What do you know about running government? What do you know about anything? Master Recchia and his boys ERASED your future. Do you understand that?

sal from coney island says:
To Carolyn from Coney Island :

If you have access to a computer , go to the Fiscal 2010/2011/2012 Expense Budget / New York City Council Finance...
Right here anyone can access the monies Councilman Recchia has given to the Sephardic Community Center located on Ocean Parkway & Ave. S'
For the past 3 years 2010, 2011 & 2012 Recchia has given over $ 690,000 to this center, which has been given taxpayer monies ( yours & mine)and the Sephardic Community Center should be open to ALL !
The Sephardic Community Center of which Recchia's protege , Louis Jerome & family are members, and are in fact on the Board of Directors , really DO NOT have an OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR ALL RESIDENTS OF THE COMMUNITY including CONEY ISLAND ETC.
The Sephardic Community Center is a closed society.
Open your books & let's see how many African Americans are members !
By the way , the SCC also has a Summer Program for Summer Camp. How many of those kids come from Coney Island ?
Afterall these $ 690,000 tax payer monies are all of our monies , not Recchia's.
They subsidize these many programs of the Sephardic Community Center. Go to their website , it's quite a program.
This is why Recchia & the Sephardic Community Center want to push Louis Jerome into Recchia's council seat. To keep the MILK comng into their community. This is a fact not a fantasy.
Let's organize & rally to get the kids of Coney Island into this $150 multi-million dollar Community Center.
Recchia has given some bones to Coney Island , a smoke screen mainly, but has GIVEN THE MEAT TO THE SEPHARDIC COMMUNITY CNETER , and in return they have given him thousands of dollars in campaign donations. This must end in this council race.
March 24, 2013, 12:59 pm
carolyn from coney island says:
I am starting a petition in my building to investigate why rich people like Jerome and the rest of his friends have received so much millions from Reccia and Greenfield. We will ask the federal government to investigate this .Why their community should get all the money?
March 24, 2013, 3:04 pm
sal from coney island says:
To Carolyn from Coney Island : Amen ! It's about time !
Perhaps you should also ask the NYC Depaartment of Investigation (DOI) to look into the issue.
Something defintely dosen't smell right !

Pat from Brighton says:
Well actually John does have a track record working with his boss Christine Quinn and Recchia the almighty Finance chair for a long time. He boasts about his experience working for the council speaker for the past decade. In his role, John helps promote the Speaker's agenda. Let's look at their highlights. John helped Quinn and Recchia lobby council members to pass congestion pricing which would have hurt residents and small businesses. John helped Quinn and Recchia pass a salary increase for Council members and staff, including John, when most city workers haven't seen a raise in years. John and Recchia lobbied council members to pass a massive property tax hike on property owners which got passed down onto renters and also hurt coops. John also lobbied council members to build a marine transfer station in Southwest Brooklyn that will do much damage to families in Southern Brooklyn. Lets not forget that John's boss and Recchia overturned the will of the people by voting to extend term limits for themselves. With that kind of self-serving track record, it is no wonder that John spends all his time attacking others. If true that Recchia has dumped John, what does it say when dirt doesn't even want to be around you? I am supporting Todd but at this point I would support anyone but John. His behavior and track record are shameful.
March 24, 2013, 3:30 pm
Sam from Bensonhurst says:
Wow turns out Lisyanskiy has a track record! Stop smoking crack its wack Pat! Jerome will spank that little Todd butt!
March 24, 2013, 7:10 pm
Pat from Brighton says:
Sam, John has no community service record but a dirty, hurtful, and shameful political record. Enough dirt to want to make someone smoke crack. It was so dirty that Domenic jumped ship a long time ago. That says a lot since Domenic is no stranger to dirt. Todd is not afraid of Jerome so don't worry about his behind.
March 24, 2013, 8:44 pm
Joey from Bensonhurst says:
Sam, aka Lisyanskiy, you got some real nerve to say something bad about Colton's clean-ups. Let me set the record straight here once and for all: first of all, those clean-ups weren't directed at cleaning the shore after Sandy. Those kids were out in the neighborhood helping pick up and sweep up trash and debris Sandy had left behind. That shows how much you know about the clean-ups. You ignorant fool.

Secondly, the 400 volunteers is not an exaggeration. Unlike you and Recchia, Colton doesn't have to lie or exaggerate to make himself look good. I was there for some of the clean-ups as an adult volunteer and I saw for myself how many volunteers they had. Then I saw pictures in the press. Those are the REAL NUMBERS. (But I guess you don't know anything about being truthful since you are the one who likes to lie and exaggerate.) Colton and his people consistently have received help from hundreds of neighborhood youth to clean the streets. You're just bitter because you can't get that many young people from our community to volunteer their time to help the people of the neighborhood.

You want to talk about liars? Go take a look in the mirror.

Even better, go get yourself a bucket of water because I'm pretty sure you're pants are on fire.

i agree with pat that lisyanskiy does not have a chance to win. the most he will have is about 1000 votes out from 8000. no chance for john.

Bella from West 5 street says:
I live in one of the Warbass buildings. Yesterday we had a meeting with a Reccia's representative who specifically informed us that Lisyanskiy is a opportunist, and he does not have his bosses support. We were told that next monh we will have a rally where Reccia and Krasniy will introduce to the russian community a new candidate, and we should support him. Some of us was shocked. I protested, since I am supporting Lisyanski. Are we back in USSR ?
March 25, 2013, 5:47 pm
Paula from West 5 street says:
The only candidate we will support is the one who will agree to come and participate in the debates. We want to know about their record, what do they plan to do for us. We want to see them all in front of us and listen to them in a civilized manner. I represent many american families, and we never heard about mr. Lisyanskiy.

Craig from Coney says:
Dobrin and Treyger are Losers! This conversation here is a freaking joke. John must be rolling and laughing at this Dobrin Treyger amateur show. We are done!
March 26, 2013, 5:30 am
Fira from Brighton says:
Craig from Coney aka Lisyanskiy - the only loser here is Lisyanskiy - you. Lisyanskiy is an amateur who needs to face reality and stick to his desk job. The people are not laughing. We are still hurting after the storm. We are glad to know that Lisyanskiy is rolling and laughing. This says a lot about him and his character. Lisyanskiy is done!
March 26, 2013, 7:52 am
Lora from Warbass says:
John, at first, I wanted to vote for you, because I saw you here after the storm, trying to help people. But then I have found that you are Reccia and Krasniy guy. You dont have a slightess idea how both of them are despized in Brighton and Coney. How you are planning to face voters with crookes- your friends? Run away from them as far as possible. If you want us to vote for you, stop being Reccia"s puppet and declare right now who from elected officials supports your compaign.Otherwise, you are toast.

Pat from Brighton says:
I want to know why Quinn, Recchia and Greenfield continue to fund Vito Lopez's political empire in Bushwick after this creep sexually harassed numerous young female employees? I don't want my taxpayer money funding this sexist creep! Todd will stop funding this creep!
March 26, 2013, 6:25 pm
Angela from Gravesend says:
I hate to see where Lisyanskiy will be January 1, 2014 when he's out of a job working for puppet Quinn. Maybe he'll join Recchia in jail. Treyger comes from an organization and is being supported by people who has a history of supporting and creating reformers. Look at Colton - he's a reformer and always has been. That's why our Assemblyman gets us real results. Not like Recchia or Krasny or the rest of them. I'm even having doubts now about Greenfield. Colton has shown over the years that he's not afraid to be independent, take a stand against big powerful interests, and then speak up for the people. He does real work for our neighborhood, unlike Recchia, Golden, Krasny, and the rest of the "boys club" who show up to things and make press releases to make themselves look good and help themselves get elected. Treyger is a hands-on, grassroots guy who isn't afraid of big powerful interests. That's a true leader in my opinion. The rest of these candidates are a bunch of clowns or crooks, at best.
March 27, 2013, 5:53 pm
Mike from Coney says:
It's difficult to trust any politician but I would like to see Todd Dobrin win. I met him at Tom's Coney Island one evening. I agree with what he had to say. It seems like he wants to really address the needs of the people.
April 11, 2013, 12:21 am
Jackie from Coney Island says:
Todd has accomplished nothing and John is right to call him an empty suit. Begging people to support you is not an accomplishment. People like John. He will win easily
April 11, 2013, 9:45 am
Lora from Warbass says:
John, people are saying that you have some mental issues, even Reccia , Krasniy and Greenfield are worried about you. I heard the same thing from Ari Kagan at his fundraiser in National restaurant. He said that a doctor he knows told him that you are smokig pot to calm you down. Please address that , otherwise you should resign.
April 12, 2013, 4:45 pm
Martha from Coney Island says:
Some commentators here are accusing John Lisyanskiy of being a lackey of Reccia and Greenfield. I live with John in the same building. Often we converse with him about the race. He is very critical of Reccia and Greenfield, pointing out to us that they are corrupt and on the payroll of rich sephardic people. John is a one man show, without any attachment to any political entity. So, please, stop calling him names. He is a good men, and has a nice family. I observed him feeding all street cats. He has a good heart, we need people like him in Washinghton.
April 14, 2013, 11:13 pm
Laurie from Coney Island says:
I have never been interested in politics before because I have always thought that it was about money. The person who has the most money wins. I am tired of hearing and reading about corrupt politicians. For the first time my views about politics has changed and that is because of Mark Treyger.
April 21, 2013, 6:15 pm
carolyn from coney island says:
i agree with martha that lisyanskiy is without any political backing. however, he works closely with quinn, who pushed bloomberg in for the third time. her, reccia and lisyanskiy are in the race for the money only. but reccia dropped lisyanskiy because the guy is nuts, unreliable and arrogant.that is why lisyanskiy is mad at reccia. we heard that dog hiking wants to support lisyanskiy. if this is true, all the minorities will turn away from him
April 22, 2013, 7:41 am
Roxy from Midwood says:
Mr.Lisyansky, who gave you the right to call Todd a ——?Iknow Todd for the last five years, and he is a straight guy with a passion for woman. Second, you are spreading rumors about Reccia and young teachers. Third, you are lying about Greenfield paying under age prostitutes. You think people don't tell us what noncense you are spreading?Be carefull talking to so many people about your opponents love lifes.I will urge people to vote for Todd, beacouse he is the only one solving problems after terrible hurrigane.
April 23, 2013, 6:56 pm
Vadim from Gravesend says:
I am not amused by childish behavior of two clowns- Lisyansky and Dobrin, who are writing these silly comments about each other. I am following local politics very close for some time. On my community board we support a very talanted young lawyer Brian Gottlieb, who is very bright and hardworking. We think he should run, and we must reject two idiots Lisyansky and Dobrin
April 25, 2013, 11:55 pm
Jennifer from Bensonhurst says:
Mark Treyger has the best track record out of all these candidates. Todd needs a reality check. All he ever does is brag about all the different things he's done. Meanwhile, all he knows how to do is show up at events to take photos and then leave! When has he ever done any hard work himself? Never! He takes credit from other people who have worked hard for the community! Sounds like just another typical politician. I know Mark from Assemblyman Colton's office and I have seen him take initiative on many issues. However, unlike Todd, Mark doesn't always claim credit for himself, jump into photos, or run to the reporters when they show up to an event. Maybe someone should teach Todd Dobrin that taking credit can be good... when you actually have DONE something. Actions speak louder than words. I know who I am voting for in September. And for those of you who aren't voting for Mark in September, you'll have to choose between Mark and the Republican candidate in November. None of these other clowns stand a chance.
May 18, 2013, 1:35 am
Boris from Coney Island says:
Lisyanskiy doesn't have ties to Bloomberg and Quinn? Of course he does! Look at his campaign website. In his biography on his website. It reads: "Speaker Christine C. Quinn, while still a Council Member was always very cordial with John and they developed a good working relationship. Therefore, when Speaker Quinn came into office as Speaker in 2006, she asked John to remain in her administration and in the Speaker’s Office."

Working for City Council when it was under Quinn's leadership means he has close ties to Quinn. And since Quinn is a rubberstamp for Bloomberg, Lisyanskiy therefore has close ties to Bloomberg. John, we don't need another 4 or 8 years of Bloomberg and Quinn right in our backyard if you're our Councilman. Well, let's face it: we might have another 12 years of you (against our will, like in 2009 when we were forced with keeping Recchia and Bloomberg) if we let you win this election. You come from the same institution and group of people which has created these horrible policies which have hindered our quality of life... especially those of us here in Southern Brooklyn.

Todd on the other hand has been talking out of both sides of his mouth. He tells one group one thing, another group something totally different. Todd, have you been taking lessons from Recchia? We know the games you've been playing. Stop lying to us! You told my friend that your stance on an issue was something, and you told my neighbor that your stance on the same issue was something else. I don't know what to believe anymore. Actually, I know who not to believe anymore... YOU!
May 18, 2013, 11:37 pm
Joey from Bensonhurst says:
Todd is far from a community activist. The one and only issue he has ever lead the community on was the boardwalk in Coney. Yes, Todd has fought against a concrete boardwalk. But on other issues, he has never emerged as a leader or done any of the hard work. He simply shows up to events, takes photos, and then brags about how much he's done to help the community. He isn't serious about helping people. He's a joke!

Mark is far from being simply an "ally" to Bill Colton. Yes, Mark has worked for Colton, and that makes him an "ally." However, Mark has been a "community activist" more than Todd has ever been!

Mark was a leader in the fight to remove a corrupt administration from Lafayette High School several years ago. The violence in the school had gotten so out of hand that these poor kids were going to the emergency room everyday. And the school's principal refused to acknowledge or work toward fixing the problems within the school. And let's not forget who was backing him at the time: our "councilman" Domenic Recchia. (And I say "councilman" in quotations because he has been far from a REAL councilman for our community over the past 12 years. He's more of a disgrace to the honor it is to hold elected office.)

Where was Todd on this issue? Nowhere. Because he wasn't running for Council yet. "

Mark has been leading the fight against the garbage station - a toxic, dangerous garbage station that will hurt the quality of life of ALL of southern Brooklyn if it is constructed and operated. The facts show that themselves. And Mark has been with Colton fighting against this garbage station for several years now... he has even stood up to the Mayor on this issue!

Where is Todd on this issue? Nowhere.

And again, on public transit issues. Todd is trying to claim credit for restoring the B64 bus line. Todd barely did anything in the fight to restore the B64. Colton led that fight - beginning in early 2012! Colton helped get the TWU-Local 100 on board with that fight. Actually, it was Mark who helped make that partnership! Once the TWU got on board, the issue started gaining real traction in the community. Mark did that! And then Colton had Mark and one of his other staffers, this young lady named Priscilla (I forgot her last name) work on that issue. I remember going to a meeting in the neighborhood and Mark was there and talked about the B64 and handed out petitions. And I was also told Mark helped contact neighborhood organizations to ask them to sign letters of support. Todd didn't do any of that. He just showed up to the rally and preached about himself... I remember because I was there. (By the way, this was the rally ORGANIZED by Colton & Mark!) How dare Todd try to claim credit for himself. And Todd doesn't even acknowledge that there was others in that fight to restore the B64. At least Mark acknowledges that Colton, Priscilla, the TWU, and community residents and organizations helped! Todd just wants all the credit for himself!

So, Todd was there on this issue. Not for the community though. Just for himself and self benefit.

Vote wisely in September. We have the opportunity to elect a real community leader. And his name IS NOT Todd Dobrin.

Exclusive! Democratic Petition Fraud CAUGHT IN THE ACT by YRs President

Someone's got some explaining to do.

This photo was taken by Brooklyn Young Republicans President Diana Sepulveda in the lobby of her building. What you're looking at is a bulletin board in the lobby of her building in Gravesend. Affixed to it is a Democratic Designating Petition for Mayoral candidate John Liu, Brooklyn Borough President candidate Eric Adams and City Council candidate Mark Treyger.

Alongside it is a note asking "Registered Democrats" to sign the petition in support of candidate Treyger. You can read the rest of the note for yourself.

For those who don't know Election Law, enrolled party members are supposed to witness the signature of other enrolled party members. In other words, any signatures submitted from these petitions, or others like these, would be done so fraudulently.

Since the culprit committing this fraud is unknown, this, in my opinion, calls into question all the signatures collected for these candidates. Is this an organized effort? A rogue petitioner? Who is to say? What would the opponents - Republican and Democrat alike - have to say about this?

And what do you think of this? Leave us a comment!

Sherry from Bensonhurst says:
everyone is a loser except for Treyger i have met him a lot and he is great man. He is the president of the Bensonhurst club for 12 years. Alot of people know him. Todd Doooobrin is a tough opponent to Mark but he should go back into a a different race . John Lisiansky like we say no to. . Paster is a man but he didnt do anything for the community. . And Andy Im gonna tear your lungs out like what he said in a school which is all over the news . Mark cares and he does alot for our community so please give him a chance and vote for him!!!!!
