It was the Russians.

In an election where Russian spies allegedly hacked Hillary Clinton’s e-mails and president-elect Donald Trump’s admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin was a central theme, the borough’s slavs proved Southern Brooklyn is Trump Country. The Donald carried the neighborhoods of Sheepshead Bay, Gravesend, Midwood, Brighton Beach, and Manhattan Beach — even as Clinton gobbled up the borough-wide vote.

And the nation’s soon-to-be 45th president can thank immigrants from The Great Bear, who supported him for his friendly relationship with Putin, his allegiance to Israel, and his promise to grow the economy, according to one area voter who is both Russian and Jewish.

“As I know many Russian-speaking Americans over 60, they were pro-Trump,” said Alexander Sirotin, a Brighton Beacher who pulled the lever for the real-estate mogul on Tuesday with some reservations. “I think because they liked some of Trump’s promises. Promises to not send any soldiers abroad, to try to talk with Putin, something like that. I feel hope for Israel, for Jewish people, because I am Jewish and I hope we are united. I cannot say that I am happy, but I hope that now there will be change, and I hope that change will be for better not for worse.”

Others were more glowing in their reactions.

“I’m over the moon that Trump won,” said Bensonhurster Rebecca Zlobinskaya, who is also Russian. “He has the business experience to change all our lives for the better. It’s a beautiful thing his winning, it really is.”

Russians just tend more conservative, and Trump’s status as an entrepreneur and political outsider was all those electors were talking about, according to an area politico who supported Hillary.

“The Russian community overwhelmingly went for Trump. I heard ‘Israel,’ I heard ‘businessman,’ I heard ‘outsider,’ and ‘not part of the political establishment,’ ” said Ari Kagan, a Democratic district leader in the 45th Assembly District, where Trump got 16,400 votes to Clinton’s 10,600. “I know that the majority of people in Brighton Beach supported Trump, it was not a surprise.”

The cultural conservative bent and a penchant for domineering political figures had Russians eating out of Trump’s hands, a critic said.

“A lot of people in my community supported him because they’re used to being brainwashed by Putin before they came here,” said Vira Andrukh, who hails from the Ukraine and said she was the only person among her friends and family who voted for Clinton.

Russians came to the area en masse starting in the 1980s and ’90s, after the fall of the Soviet Union, and the borough’s Russian community has a sizable number of ex-Soviet seniors and newly arrived immigrants — two groups who rely on the very social services The Donald has pledged to reign in, a local social worker said.

“The Russian community, I think they’re vulnerable,” said Pat Singer, who runs the Brighton Neighborhood Association. “When I hear that my Russian neighbors are voting for Trump, who has said ‘immigrants out’ — and he doesn’t like government programs — do they know what they are doing?”

Coounty-wide, Clinton got a total 595,086 votes to Trump’s 133,653.

Red and blue: A breakdown by Assembly district shows that Northern Brooklyn overwhelmingly went for Clinton, but Southern Brooklyn was a closer race — Trump even carried two districts covering the Ocean Parkway corridor.
Updated 4:33 pm, November 11, 2016: Vladimir Putin is the president of the Russain Federation — not the prime minister. We regret the error.

Bill from Brooklyn Heights says:
Maybe you should inform Mr. Sirotin that Trump was NOT elected by a majority of Americans. As of 4pm, Hillary is up in the popular vote by almost 220,000 votes.

Ed from Mill Basin says:
I would add that majority of Russian speaking over 30 are pro-Trump and Putin has nothing to do with it except that we hope that Trump and Putin will both hit ISIS and Syrian rebels contrary to Obama's support provided to anti-american and anti-Assad forces .
Russian Americans actually care about well being of our country and actual issues in these elections

Galina from Sheepshead Bay says:
Ms. Singer
It's big difference between legal and illegal immigration.
You should know about.
He was talking Only about illegal immigration.
Please don't disinform people.

Bella from Sheepshead Bay says:
Ms. Singer is trying to picture all Russians as government programs receivers. Which is wrong. As well as bringing Putin into the picture. I am not a Trump supporter myself but understand where many are coming from. I do "feel" for poor and illegal immigrants but why my medical insurance I pay for more than $600 per month should be worse than the same insurance for illegal immigrants? Why business owners should be thinking about closing their doors because of dozens of mandates and hidden taxes. People make their choices lately based on their financial situation not on ideology. It is very easy to talk about equality and rights without counting money in your own packet.

Gabi from Midwood says:
Ari Kagan should be ashamed of himself. he is a fake a phony and a coward. This is a democratic district leader who was too scared to publicly support our democratic nominee for President. He should be voted out as district leader he has no business being one if he can not communicate positions of democratic party. This is a nasty opportunist who thinks he will be elected one day by democrats who he betrays and plays to his Russian friends who supported Trump. He thinks everyone is idiotic and "stupid" americans as he likes to say. Mike should run against this bigot and take him out he is a fraud.

alan podhaizer from coney island says:
I wish Trump well. he is our president. ARI KAGAN did support CLINTON very strongly. There was no danger of Trump carrying NEW YORK STATE.
TO MY FELLOW SENIORS WHO ARE COLLECTING SOCIAL SECURITY the reason is that we did not receive a cost of living increase is because the law has a definite formula based on the cost of living index of several items. EDICAL COSTS ARE NOT REALLY INCLUDED. DESPITE ATTEMPTS TO CHANGE THE FORMULA HAVE BEEN BLOCKED BY THE REPUBLICAN CONGRESS. IF CLINTON MENTIONED THIS SHE MIGHT HAVE ONE.

ROSALIE907 from GRAVESEND says:
To Gabi from Midwood: Mike Geller is a DINO. He bows at the feet of Rudy Giuliani an his Club, Highway Den supported Dan Donovan for Congress(even though we didn't have a vote on this) and didn't even invite Richard Richardt to speak to the club members.
I don't know how Frank Seddeo allows High Way Dems exist since when he took over the Brooklyn Democratic Party he promised to "clean the swamp" of rouge Democratic Clubs. This is one reason why Mike Geller is no longer District Leader
in this part of Brooklyn.

Inga from Sheepshead Bay says:
Russians vote against socialistic road the country is heading under the current presidency, which is not gonna change under Hilary. They know how it looks like and what it is. It is sad that some of us/them hate Putin and Russia more than they are scared of terrorist attacks, ISIS danger for US and Israel and future of our children. They associate Trump with Putin and gladly support Hilary's lies about "17 analytic agencies" which is proven to be wrong. That's why most of Russian vote for a change even if it will be difficult times for every american. Country needs changes, it's heading in a wrong direction.

alex from sheepshead bay says:
Too many factual mistakes! Putin is not a Prime Minister, "Russians" of Brighton Beach are usually not slavs, but Jews... Bad journalism! Also, many soviet immigrants always vote Republican, because local Russian speaking media is Republican and democrats are associated with socialism of the old country.

It's sad just how racist the byline as well as the premise of this article is. Shameful stuff right there, you also couldn't even edit it for mistakes. What a joke

Sarah from Bensonhurst says:
Matty, do you even know what a byline is? I find it hilarious that the first 2 first-names on there match those of the waitresses on 2 Broke Girls. Too bad Julianne isn't a Sophie! :-)

Rick from Midwood says:
I find it pitiful that these Russians are so misinformed about Trump. They should have watched 60 Minutes where they would have heard him say, basically, that what he said during the campaign was only rhetoric to inflame his base. How do you expect a man who has done nothing for this country for almost 70 years to suddenly turn around and do something for anyone but himself? I know many Russians and admire them for their adherence to a social norm but I'm dismayed that they cannot see that the same policies that allowed them refuge in this country are the policies that Trump is going to suspend. Why are these Russians suddenly so selfish. I sense that there are some feeling that were not left behind in the old country, such as racism and a basic fear of democratic ideals.

arka from bensonhurst says:
so u and ur beloved dnc/liberals would give me and rest of Jews to our enemies to sharia and russia, this is exactly nazism and not democracy u r talking about, this is what u and dnc did i never voted for ubumer, he is ur pres, i never went to pogroms agaisnst ubumer i waited 8 years for Hashem to make normal democracy and what i do see after nov 8 2016 elections in week of Kristallancht when liberals nov 8-12 went to do pogroms because i voted against them, so ergo dnc is wrong on all accounts, dnc is guilty for ubumer crimes and liberal crimes against me, so dont go call selfish after 8 years of insanity of liberalism and barbarism
