The boys’ high-school basketball season starts the same way last one ended: with everyone looking up at Lincoln, the three-time city and two-time state champions. Right behind them is No. 2 Bishop Loughlin, dominant inside with a bevy of young guards ready to fill the void left by James Johnson and Doron Lamb. Comment

Courageous Patterson plays after being struck by car

Through her tears from a hospital bed, Valerie Patterson told her coach and her parents she was playing. The South Shore senior was struck by a breaking car coming out of a McDonalds drive-through across the street from the school Thursday night. She suffered a severely sprained right ankle. Even with the injury, her concern for herself became secondary to not letting her team down for one of its toughest games. Comment

All it took was one shot for Baytania Newman to realize the fourth quarter would belong to her. With the score tied with 4:42 left, Newman connected on a one-handed floater in the lane to give South Shore the lead for good. Comment
