Wow, no wonder state Sen. Marty Golden (R–Bay Ridge) was re-elected. He really comes across with the goods. He is so in tune with his constituents that he knows exactly what they need when they need it. And in the nick of time, no less. The good senator was able to secure a grant of 43,000 buckeroos toward a new emergency fire rescue vehicle for the Gerrittsen Beach Volunteer Fire Department when the venerable house celebrated its 90th anniversary. Two touchdowns and a big Standing O to senior Laray Smith. The high schooler was selected to play in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl sponsored by the United States Marines Corps this January in Carson, California. Our pal Laray is no stranger to fame. The running back was named Junior All-American in the 200-meter dash last year and is a three-year football standout, averaging almost 10 yards per carry this season for the Clippers. Comment

It was a tough trek over hills and dales in a strange place called Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, but our girls at Bishop Kearney High School ran rings around the other schools at the New York City Mayor’s Cup Race. More than 48 teams, comprised of public and private schools, competed in the annual event, but guess who came out on top? Comment

From nurse to playwright

She went in as a nurse and came out a playwright. Kimberly La Force entered the nursing program with one year as a registered nurse in her cap with all intentions of continuing her medical career, but a funny thing happened on the way to the podium. Our pal took a creative writing course led by Prof. Jane Mushabac and the rest, as they say, is blockbuster Broadway history. Comment

Teen fills really big shoes

Medals to Walter Wolford for filling some really big shoes. The teen honored Private Isaac Cortes, who was killed in action in Iraq, by wearing combat boots for an entire year while performing community service. Our pal Walter participated in the “Step Into Their Boots” program, which was created by a member of the United War Veterans Council to ensure that the nation’s youth understand and appreciate what fallen military service members have done for this nation through their own community service. Infertility and fertility medical offices open in Brooklyn Heights

The ribbon was snipped with care on Oct. 10 when Reproductive Medicine Associates of New York opened a new office at 26 Court St. Medical director and borough son Dr. Joshua Klein will lead a team of doctors, nurses, and technicians in offering patients the latest, state-of-the-art technology in the treatment of fertility, infertility, and comprehensive chromosomal screening. Italian Americans were feted at a gala hosted by Brooklyn’s other booster, Borough President Markowitz, on Oct. 4 at Borough Hall. The annual “Italian American Heritage Celebrazione” (that’s “celebration” in Italiano (that’s Italian)) celebrates outstanding Italian Brooklynites for their dedication, devotion, and involvement in their communities! Kudos to Nereida “Nelly” Silverio, RN. The outstanding angel of mercy who gives out lots of TLC at Lutheran Medical Center was honored with the Daisy (diseases attacking the immune system) award for her dedication to her craft and depth of compassion that she gives to her patients. Our pal Nelly has been with the center for more than 13 years and received her degree in nursing in 2001. Comment

Pencils, paper, backpacks, books — no more empty desks, yeah! The staff at Downstate Long Island College Hospital went deep into their pockets to donate new school supplies for the children of Public School 15 at 71 Sullivan St. Everyday items, including pens, pencils, notebooks, calculators, crayons, and markers were on the list. The bodacious bakery has been in the pink for breast cancer research since 2001 when franchise owner Sue Stees first developed the pink ribbon-shaped breakfast staple, and has since raised well more than $1 million to combat the dreaded disease. Husband-and-wife doctors Kiran Patel and Pallevi Patel gave a generous six-figure gift to the Brooklyn Hospital Center at its Founder’s Ball on June 6 — a $250,000 donation to have the hospital’s emergency room waiting area remodeled. We here at Standing O know that the only thing worse than waiting in an emergency room is waiting in an uncomfortable emergency room chair, so we personally want to thank Drs. Patel for their donation from the bottom of our hearts — and bottoms. Comment

The Scholar honor was bestowed on Standing O pal Xiang Dong because of “his hands-on expertise and scholarship in information security and applications of quantum physics in quantum computing,” said Dean of Curriculum and Instruction Sonja Jackson. She told Standing O, “His ongoing mentorship of students opens opportunities and motivates them to pursue graduate degrees.” Standing O is motivated and not even a student. Comment

It’s the greatest class ever — when the students in third, fourth and fifth grade at PS 188 heard that there was going to be a robotics course offered, they ran over each other to sign up. The new Lego Robotics Program led by Evan Mirenberg, which began in January, teaches children how to build and program a robot. The course also provides a strong foundation for the students to succeed, reenforces how to work together, and prepares them for a techno future that’s only going to get more complex. Comment

On Jan. 26, 1911 Glen Curtiss demonstrated the first amphibian aeroplane; on Feb. 17, 1911 Charles Kettering introduced the first electrical ignition system for automobiles, and installed it in a Cadillac; and just two days later on Feb. 19, 1911 Jose and Victoria Acevedo of Hato Tejas, Puerto Rico, had a little girl, who grew up to be our very own Standing O pal, Gavina, who married Juan Galfio Guadarrama and settled here to raise their family.
