Fiery theft

Police have arrested the thief who tried to set fire to a Coney Island store in a failed bid to rob the place.

Officials said that Christopher Brown, 31, was connected to the botched hold up at Sammy’s Grocery, 3202 Mermaid Avenue, back on April 28.

Workers alleged that Brown stormed up to the partially closed store, which is between West 32nd and West 33rd streets, at 2:40 am, claiming to have a gun and demanding the clerk hand over his money.

But the brazen clerk didn’t relent and sent Brown on his way.

Two hours later Brown returned, claiming he was going to set fire to the store if the clerk didn’t open the door.

The employee refused, but soon smelled smoke. When he finally opened up the store, he discovered that Brown had allegedly charred his security gate, and had run off.

Cops caught up with him this week, charging him with attempted robbery, attempted grand larceny and arson.
