One of eleven locations throughout New York City, this beautifully appointed Art Deco cafe is dominated by a sumptuous display case piled with colorful and tasty-looking sandwiches, pastries and salads. Early birds may pick up an egg sandwich and a fresh fruit smoothie, or for the decadent, a cappuccino to wash down a chocolate croissant. For lunch, you can create your own salad, choose from among eight soups like Tuscan vegetable or salmon potato chowder, or try one of their “hot pressini melts,” such as Cajun chicken with pepper jack cheese, roasted peppers and chipotle spread. There are quesadillas, burgers, wraps, and hot entrees including BBQ pork chops and Thai curry chicken. If there’s room for dessert, a Key lime bar or peanut butter brownie is almost irresistible. The staff is friendly and polite, and Cafe Metro offers free delivery with no minimum charge. Winter hours are 6 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and 6 am to 2 pm Saturday.
