Smith Canteen is a bustling coffee and sandwich shop housed in a turn-of-the-century pharmacy and owned and operated by the team behind Seersucker. Like Seersucker, it focuses on seasonal and local ingredients, many of which are sourced from the weekly Carroll Street Greenmarket, right across the street. Coffee comes from CounterCulture of Durham, N.C., an organic coffee company dedicated to sourcing practices that go beyond fair trade. All the baristas are trained at Counter Culture’s training facility in the Flatiron district and have a following for their lattes, cappuccinos and cortados. When the weather gets warmer, the rich and balanced iced coffee is the beverage of choice. Among the regular lunchtime offerings are a cubano sandwich, house-brined turkey on an everything croissant and Vietnamese fried chicken salad. Daily soup, sandwich and salad specials depend on what is available from the farmers market. Smith Canteen also has a baker on premises, so there is a range of muffins, croissants and cookies available all day long. Breakfast sandwiches and yogurt with housemade granola are available every morning. Breakfast, Lunch, Baked Goods, Coffee; open seven days a week, 7:00 a.m. to 6;00 p.m.
