A mall is not just a mall.
Once a month, Kings Plaza at Flatbush Avenue and Avenue U doubles as a meeting ground for children.
“It’s a wonderful event,” said John Scaturro, organizer of the Kings Plaza Kids Club. “There’s always very cool things for the children to do. It’s free. It’s in a great, safe, enclosed environment. In the summer heat, it’s cool in the mall. In the winter, it’s warm in the mall. It’s a great place to come to have some fun.”
The club meets from January to October on the fourth Saturday of the month in the center court on the first floor of the mall. The club is open to children two to 12 years of age.
“We do a different event every month,” Scaturro said. “It usually involves some free crafts activity where they can do a ‘make and take’ activity, where they do some craft project and bring it home, or storytelling.”
There’s also special events featuring local celebrities.
“In August, the Brooklyn Cyclones were here signing baseballs,” Scaturro said.
To celebrate Halloween, the club recently held a ghoul-themed celebration. Children happily posed for photos in their creative costumes. Parents were excited to see their little tykes dressed up as witches, angels, pirates, firefighters, and, of course, Spiderman and Iron Man.
Radio Disney was on hand to add to the festivities.
“Radio Disney was here doing contests and games and giving out prizes to the kids,” Scaturro said. “They do a Radio Disney dance party and they have trivia questions that kids answer and win prizes. We had a costume contest. Each of them won Disney DVDs and a $30 Kings Plaza gift card.”
“We also gave out our safe Halloween goody bag,” Scaturro added. The bag included a glow stick for children to wear on Halloween night.
The Kings Plaza Kids Club was created seven years ago.
“It was an opportunity to provide entertainment for families of small children that frequent our mall,” Scaturro explained. “We try very, very hard to give people an opportunity to come to the mall and do things other than just shop and the Kids Club is just one of those things that we provide throughout the year.”
The mall hosts other community events, such as the Pathmark Caribbean Festival, Brooklyn Cyclones national anthem auditions, and the Flatbush Boys and Girls Club fashion show.
Scaturro said all of these events are part of an effort to strengthen ties with the community.
“We try to be a part of the community,” he said. “We believe that we should be good corporate citizens and that we should be a positive influence in the community.”
