The anticipated debates between Councilman Lew Fidler and GOP attorney David Storobin will have to wait.

Fidler (D–Marine Park), who has been hospitalized for nearly a week, announced earlier today that he’s skipping back-to-back debates with Storobin scheduled to take place today and tomorrow as he continues to recover from a severe allergic reaction — but the pol insists he and his senate rival will square off as soon as his doctor gives him the go ahead.

“I can’t wait for the opportunity to discuss my record and vision for the future of our great community,” Fidler said in a statement. “As soon as my doctor lets me, I’ll be there.”

Fidler campaign spokesman Kalman Yeger said the lawmaker had a bad reaction to one of the drugs he takes to combat the gout — a painful condition where a buildup of uric acid in the body causes joints to swell. Yeger wouldn’t provide any more medical details, nor would he say where Fidler is getting treatment or when he’ll be discharged.

Storobin, the vice president of the Kings County Republican party, was quick to wish his opponent a speedy recovery.

“I fully understand the need to postpone political activities while he gets well,” Storobin said.

The pair are locked in a closely-watched race to replace disgraced former state Sen. Carl Kruger, who resigned last year before pleading guilty to accepting $1 million in bribes.

The debates were scheduled to take place in Manhattan Beach tonight, and the Flatbush Park Jewish Center on Avenue U in Mill Basin tomorrow.

Both campaigns confirmed that Thursday’s showdown will be rescheduled, but they won’t have much time: the special election for Kruger’s district is set for March 20.

Gene B. from Sheepshead Bay says:
With due respect, if Lew Fidler is too sick to attend a local debate, I fear he may be too sick to represent us in Albany. We see the results of the strain of a campaign. I worry that the strain of traveling back and forth and the hectic schedule of a state senator may be a risk he shouldn't expose himself and his family to. I wish him a speedy recovery and best wishes to his family.

Tony from Marine Park says:
Why is it that whenever someone says "With due respect" they are about to show none. Is this what the Brooklyn GOP establishment has sunk to? Taking pot shots at Lew Fidler's health? Maybe they should worry about their candidates anemic fundraising. Or maybe his campaign's sickening ties to a child-abuser.

Come on Gene. You know they don't work that hard.

Republican from Brooklyn says:
It's been known by insiders for some time that Democratic State Senate candidate Lew Fidler has multiple medical conditions. Recently he ceased personal campaigning due to the allergic reaction to drugs prescribed for his gout condition. Why hasn't the Storobin campaign used Mr. Fidler's health as a campaign issue? Would it be too hard for Storobin or somebody on his campaign staff to ask, " Is Lew Fidler up to a new and more demanding job as a New York State Senator with its grind of commuting back and forth to Albany?" Or possibly somebody could ask, "Is Fidler's hospitalization a one-time deal; or is it likely to recur becuase Fidler has chronic or recurring health conditions?"Have issues like these been raised before? If not, why not?

If Mr. Fidler needs his doctor to give him clearance to debate ,

maybe we need to know from his doctor if Lew is healthy enough to become a State Senator & make the up & back travel to Albany.

It can be brutal to travel there every week.

Lew , come clean on your health problems.

Dolcia Critica from In the New 47th AD says:
Gene R. Berardelli, the Brooklyn Republican Party Law Chairman and defacto operator of the Brooklyn Republican Party’s blogs, attempted to raise the issue of Lew Fidler’ health in a very backhanded way in his earlier comment here (see BRB's comment to CL's Brooklyn Daily above) and again on one of his own “Official” Brooklyn GOP blogs on 3/3/12 (see“Pots & Kettles - And Dumb@$$ Liberal Bloggers” by GRB in “Brooklyn GOP Radio - Official - Show Blog”). This twice resulted in getting some sharp blowback from a well-known blogger called “Gatemouth” in a city-wide political blog, “Room Eight”. In addition to that, it looks like some independent Republicans working for David Storobin’s election posted a complaining comment in “Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn” yesterday saying that Berardelli’s stuff looked great to Berardelli and his friend Russell Gallo (currently the Male Republican Leader in the 47th AD, which has EDs in David Storobin's 27th Senate District), but that Berardelli's comments turned out terribly for Storobin's Campaign for the State Senate in the 27th S.D.

Dolcia Critica from Southern Brooklyn says:
Mr. Gene R. Berardelli, Esq. is continuing to press his completely disingenuous defense of himself and the indefensible remarks, which he made on February 29th (Comment above: “Gene B. from Sheepshead Bay says”). Today, March 5, 2012, on his “Brooklyn GOP Radio - Official - Show Blog” Mr. GRBEsq posted “What's A "Eunich" And Other Graubard Buffoonery”. As one of Mr. GRBEsq’s close associates in “The Jig is Up Atlas” likes to say, “The question begs...” how much Brooklyn GOP money is going to pay for all of this buffoonery by Mr. GRBEsq ?

Mr. GRBEsq seems to take issue with the following: “ Apparently I'm not just fat - I'm a fat, insincere liar!” Well, just count me and my friends “In” as a lot of votes “For” that proposition. I’ve seen Mr. GRBEsq up close in court, and I’ve heard some things about other antics of his. None of it is very pretty or very nice and neither is Mr. GRBEsq. Just ask anybody, how did Mr. GRBEsq become the Kings County Republican Law Chairman? Was it by unfairly doing and undoing something that the prior Law Chairman did in Court in an election case against somebody who had been an ally of Mr. GRBEsq’s County Leader, until the rug was pulled? Everyone should take heed of this, Mr. GRBEsq’s advice and support is like loose and shifting sand.

I must point out that Mr. GRBEsq’s most recent blog posting is another silly hissy fit about nothing that will help the Republican Party in Brooklyn or help elect anybody to be a Republican State Senator. What is or isn’t only politics, what is or isn’t good manners, and whether some other man has, as Mr. GRBEsq puts it, “his preoccupation with my body” only matters to Mr. GRBEsq and his close associate, the current 47th AD Leader, Russell Gallo. I don’t care if Mr. GRBEsq is or isn’t “weirded out about” some part of what “Gatemouth” says, I’m weirded out by ALL of what Mr. GRBEsq says on the subject.

Some of us are taking a close look at what Mr. GRBEsq, and his close allies in the 47th A.D., leaders, Phyllis Carbo and Russell Gallo are actually doing in the 47th A.D. for David Storobin’s campaign in the Special Election for the State Senate. We’ll keep our own tally and when the proper time comes, we’ll tell everybody what they really did or didn’t do, like for instance just this past Sunday.
