It’s a false idol!

A statue of the baby Jesus is once again resting in the Nativity scene at St. Anselm Church after the original was nabbed the day after Christmas, but don’t call it a second coming — officials had to use a new statue because the blasphemous bandit did not return the old one as parish officials had initially hoped.

“It hasn’t been returned yet. We had to replace it,” a staff member at the Fourth Avenue house of worship said. “But we’re hoping it will show up.”

Security cameras caught the apparent culprit, who church officials believe is a mentally unstable woman living nearby and who may have tried to give the statue sanctuary from the day’s rain.

Sources at nearby Visitation Academy told this paper that their Jesus had also been savior-napped on Dec. 26, but officials later clarified that they just forgot to put the infant-king in his manger for Christianity’s second-biggest holiday after Easter.

Paul Muccigrosso from Bay Ridge says:
Thank you for the story, but I don't understand the first sentence of the article and its relevance to the story. I'm referring to the sentence that reads, "It's a false idol!" What is a false idol? Why is this relevant to the story of the theft?
