To save one life

Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz (D–Sheepshead Bay) honored the student winners of his 17th annual Holocaust Memorial Creative Arts Contest at a ceremony held at Kingsborough Community College’s Marine Academic Center.

Opening remarks by the assemblyman and Michelle Anderson, president of the school, welcomed the more than 350 students, guests, and family who attended.

This year’s challenge for the students was to respond to the quote by the late Nobel Laureate and survivor Elie Wiesel: “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.”

The representative spoke about some of the winning projects, including a suitcase filled with a teddy bear and other meager belongings of a young orphaned Holocaust survivor.

“My parents were fortunate to have each other, but they too were forced to rebuild,” shared the assemblyman.

He added, “Sadly, the number of survivors who bore witness to this tragic time is getting smaller. So it’s critically important that you continue to learn, to read.”

The contest was cosponsored by Manhattan Beach Jewish Center, Holocaust Memorial Committee, the Lena Cymbrowitz Foundation, and Project Witness.

Wow - Joanna covering the Jewish religion? How much did that burn you up inside? You know, sympathizing with Neo-Nazis and all.
