Superheroes, princesses, and werewolves hung up their school knapsacks for the day to celebrate fall and Halloween during the annual Fall Family Arts Day Festival at the Connie Lekas School for students with special needs on Oct. 28. One youngster who dressed as a Transformer had a blast exploring every activity in the room with his older sister, said 1-year-old Nahuel Roberts mom.

“They were painting, they went into the bouncy house, they played a little basketball, football,” said Sharay Roberts, who lives in East New York. “They had the cotton candy and made the sand bottles.”

The Connie Lekas School serves students age 12 to 21 with severe, multiple disabilities, and because it’s often difficult for them to socialize with other kids, school leaders invite the school staff and those in the community to bring their own kids to the festival so everyone can enjoy the fun together — there were smiles on everyone’s faces, said a staffer at the Haring Street school.

“It was fabulous,” said Marcia Cacaci, the technology coordinator and media specialist. “It becomes a very social event and we invite members of the community in.”
