He’s Golden on!

Republican State Sen. Marty Golden refuses to concede his seat to Democratic upstart Andrew Gounardes, even after the challenger declared victory in Tuesday’s General Election by winning more than 1,100 votes than the incumbent.

Golden for sixteen years has represented the state’s 22nd Senate District — which includes Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend, and parts of Sheepshead Bay, Borough Park, and Midwood — and won’t give up his office until thousands of outstanding absentee ballots are counted, he said.

“We’re just going to go through the paper, and I think even my opponent and everybody out there that’s listening understands that every vote counts,” Golden told Spectrum News New York 1 on Nov. 8. “I think everybody would want to know that their vote was counted.”

The most-recent data from the state Board of Election shows that Gounardes won the race with 31,168 votes to Golden’s 30,039, with all precincts reporting results.

But the Kings County Board of Elections still has to count absentee ballots requested by 3,400 voters in the district, according to a rep for the state board, who said added that the county board so far has received some 1,826 of those ballots — 1,053 of which came from registered Democrats, 477 from Republicans, 39 from Independents, 37 from Conservatives, three from Green Party members, two from Working Families Party members, and 213 from voters not registered with any party.

Voters’ party affiliations, however, do not necessarily indicate their vote, since they can select any candidate in the General Elections, state-board rep Cheryl Crouser said.

The county board is accepting absentee ballots through Nov. 13, and officials will begin counting them the next day, Crouser said. The county board has until Dec. 3 to finish its count of the overall votes, and the state board must certify the results by Dec. 14, she said.

Golden campaign spokesman Michael Tobman claimed that votes from seven ballot scanners still have to be counted, too, but a spokeswoman for the city Board of Elections could not confirm the number of scanned votes left to be counted.

The county board began an audit of a random selection of the borough’s scanners on Nov. 9 as part of the standard post-election certification process.

Gounardes, for his part, is confident in the victory he already declared, and believes the remaining ballots won’t affect his planned trip to Albany when the state Senate begins its next session in January, according to a rep.

“When every vote is counted, we are comfortable with our margins and look forward to serving the residents of District 22,” said Dara Adams.

Jon from Bay Ridge says:
I'm glad senator Golden wants all votes counted. There were so many broken machines this year it was scary. We were told to drop our ballots into the emergency slot and they would be scanned later. Were they? What time? I also saw many violations at the polling places also. Count the votes.

VOTER ID NOW! Other countries have voted IDs, why don't we? It's fair. It's needed.
Nov. 9, 2018, 7:37 pm
Ken from Bensonhurst says:
As a nation, we need to do better verifying that the person voting is actually the person they claim they are and when they register that they are allowed to vote (a citizen). Using a driver's license as proof to register to vote is not valid as drivers licenses are given to non-citizens. Since the US government now requires its citizens to use an Enhanced Driver License or a passport to travel by air or enter a federal place, I think this should be also applied when you vote. Mr. Golden, I hope after all the votes are counted you are found to have won.

Marty's time is up, time for Golden life long staffers like Quaglione to get off the public dime and get a real job..time to move on.

Jax from Dyker says:
So if Golden loses,it was voter fraud but if Gounardes loses, it was his fault for having the audacity to challenge King Marty? Puh-lease!

If we are throwing around Liam's name as a possible future Chairman of the local Republican Party, or as a future candidate for local or even national office, then I believe all references to Liam’s infamous and sadly recurring battle against alcoholism are entirely appropriate and relevant. If we are to speak plainly, Liam is an unpredictable and uncontrolled loose nut who is likely to cause unintentional damage to himself, the Republican Party and scores of innocent civilians along Sixth Avenue.

Keith A. from Bay Ridge says:
Duffy, you are a spineless coward for making inaccurate comments like that while hiding behind the anonymity of local papers comment section. Millions of people suffer from addiction in this world. At least Liam was man enough to shamelessly confront it publicly knowing full well pieces of shyt like yourself would pass judgement. That took unbelievable courage. Too bad we cant say the same for you.

Val Murphy from Bensonhurst says:
Golden forgot how to take of his voters a long time ago and got way too comfortable in his position. Doesn’t care about the middle class anymore, at all.

Duffy Two from Bay ridge says:
Keith A You normally would have a point but Liam chose to make it public and when he has not one but three lapses in past 4 years causing him to go back to rehab that's an issue. You can only talk about your "battles " so many times..especially when that problem has caused you to get arrested, say crazy things on social media, and fired from a govt job

Duffy Two from Bay ridge says:
Liam punched a hole while drunk through the wall of the then Brooklyn GOP office on 17th Avenue just a few years ago. I was there. I am sure an inquisitive reporter can confirm this and the many other incidents of Liams antics

Joe from Bay ridge says:
The personal baggage of Liam McCabe is well documented, a simple Google search will show just some of the issues and stories but just as importantly are his Political decisions and record.. Last year he got killed in a city council GOP primary This year he led the Bklyn campaign of former convicted felon Michael Grimm in a Rep primary against Donovan. By the Dono van employed him for a couple of years and when Liam left to run for Council and then wanted to return Donovan said no so Liam went to Grimm. Grimm lost to Dono van in Brooklyn about 70-30 percent. Finally, Liam was the campaign manager of Steve Saperstein's losing campaign in the 46th AD. It was winnable by many accounts. If Republicans want to start winning again, it is clear they should look elsewhere then Liam McCabe

Marty should bow out gracefully and go out on top like a gentlemen. Defiantly fighting last Tuesday's results because his goons are telling him too is a bad look in my book. Marty can go out like a hero or he can go out like Joe Hynes did and destroy his hole legacy of acheivements

Pedro from bay ridge (formally) says:
So glad i got out of crap bay ridge. Marty lost, Donavan lost. All the people coming in and buying houses from communist, socialist, and theocratic countries, not to mention the hipsters that cant afford to live in williamsburgh. Now i read about stabbings, murders and rapes on the rise in a once safe neighborhood. Marty just concede, let Comrade Gounardes take the reigns. Just sit back, enjoy your retirement and watch bayridge go down in flames.
Nov. 12, 2018, 10:05 am
Sharon Engel from Bay Ridge says:
Pedro, According to the police precinct crime in Bay Ridge is at its lowest in ten years. The people buying homes in Bay Ridge are hardworking, decent people. Why do you care where they are from? They came to this country and this city for the same reason your family did. They have saved their earnings to be able to buy a home. Also, most of those "hipsters" are quite pleasant people. Yes, Bay Ridge is changing, but for the better.

Mike from old Bay Ridge says:
I worked elections for a few years. Used to watch when election bosses would visit polling place to look around. All of them Democrats. Someone needs to start looking at the party affiliation of the people running the elections. GOP fell asleep while Dems were taking over. Just look at Florida. Snipes and Bucher. Both Dems. Count the votes, Marty.

Double Pounder Mike says:
Here's me: I don't understand why all this squabbling over who will be the new GOP Party Chair when there is no Party left to speak of. Nicole Malliotakas is the only one left standing. The Brooklyn Republican Party officially died last Tuesday night. And Liam? He will be with Artie Lang soon enough if you catch my drift. Things are bad, again, for Liam. Very, very bad, indeed. A conversation by the old railroad trestle isn't going to save him now.

Stu gotz from Bay ridge says:
Marty, time to retire bud. You had a good run. Don't go down like Little Vinnie Gentile. Little Vinnie is a guy whose buddies try to get him elected for anything (they must feel bad for him being so short). Little Vinnie couldn't get elected dog catcher. I am pretty sure all little Vinnie does is canvas like a high schooler, go to laundry mat grand openings, judge baking contests at the senior center, etc. I do think I saw little Vin skulking around at a recent subway opening, though I think the only reason he was there was to bring awareness how easy it is for people of a certain height to be asbke to slips under the turnstile undetected. Please don't become a joke like Little Vinny Marty.
